It really depends on how the market evolves. I normally like to keep vehicles for a decade, but I do worry about the longevity of the suspension.

I'd probably upgrade earlier if the market delivers one of the two options:

1. An updated R1T that delivers on the three updates I've come down as non-negotiables, even though they seem small. These are mechanical door latches, a quality option to listen to music I own (I despise streaming services), and backwards compatibility with the GoFast camper I expect to get.

2. A high quality EV truck that is ~20% more Tacoma than the R1T. I'd rather have mechanical simplicity and repairability over electric/software-everything that is locked into a proprietary service network. It has to be a legitimately good EV (battery size, charging speed, route planning, etc), with fancy gizmos/party tricks optional.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
That's my plan as of now. Lease the R2 until the R3 is available.
I like that idea too. If my wife and I want to keep the R2 we can just buy out the lease and I’ll lease the R3 next. I’m thinking it will take 2-3 years to fully ramp the R2 before the R3 is even in production.

Wow you’ve had 2 cars totaled? 8-10 years?
Actually, I only totaled one on my own. It was a 2000 Acura Integra. It was a great car up until I lost control on the shoulder gravel in the curve. It was a roll over, but no injuries. That happened in 2009. It was replaced by a new Honda Civic which lasted until I got my R1T. It had about 328K miles on it. Sold it for $800. I got every penny's worth out of that car.

My son was borrowing my 1986.5 Nissan King Kab to move. A BMW ran a red light and hit him. Insurance totaled it.

I'm hoping that Arty lasts another 8 to 10 years. I try to keep my vehicles until they are used up.

I'm hoping to keep my Gen1 R1T for as long as I can. Sold my Chevy Avalanche after owning it for 16 years. Still have my '05 Town & Country and a '91 Camry. Purchased the extended warranty last March at 55K miles. Now I have 72K miles and have had 3 extended warranty claims where they have already covered $14K of repairs in just 7 months after original warranty expired (this doesn't include the estimated $21K in suspension repairs done last April at 57K miles). EV repairs are costly, so invest in the extended warranty if you're going to hold onto it. Got my extended warranty through XCare. www.xcelerateauto.com

Lease is up Sept '27. Not a day longer than I have to.

After being in 4-5 different trucks now for varying lengths of time, I'm convinced Rivian is still a boutique brand for early adopters. Production numbers aren't high enough to truly iron out quality issues, and each vehicle has something different that's broken or otherwise not working as intended. Rivian just absolutely NAILS a few things like customer service, and innovative features, but the buggy software updates, and the constant service visits have me completely exhausted. Mine is currently in the shop for the 12th visit in 16mo. I need something in my life that I can depend on and lessens my workload, not something that gives me constant anxiety and adds things to my "shit to do list".

The biggest problem, and I both love and hate Rivian for this.......is that there really isn't another good competitor, and I don't see anything on the horizon to change that. So, maybe I'll give them another shot when my lease is up, but it won't be because of customer satisfaction, it'll be because of a lack of compelling alternative options.

Also, as a small side caveat here; I'm not super enthused with the direction of the brand in general. The concentration on AI, driver aids, and the doubling down on the premise of a "software defined vehicle" just isn't for me. I would rather them continue to innovate with new physical features, manufacturing prowess, and quality control. I think they're stepping away from what, IMO, could be a VERY strong set of core competencies here to move further towards a SAAS model.

Plan is to let my son “have” it when he gets his license in 3 or so years. Then maybe I will move to a Gen3. Can’t see myself owning anything else.
my wife has a 2021 Mach-e that my older son will get in 1.5 years and she wants a R2. We will c!?!?!

Not sure how long I'll keep the R1T. If I can maintain it without it costing me an arm and a leg, I'll do it. Also, if there's a radical improvement in battery technology, I might bite the bullet and buy something new. No matter what, I'm going to need a truck of some sort for hauling stuff.

I like to switch out every few years too, but I don’t think there’s a better daily out there (at a reasonable price, that is - I’d swap it for a Cayenne Turbo or maybe a Taycan Turbo…). Makes the idea of a 2nd vehicle a lot more appealing when you know that the Rivian will still be close to the top of the line even in 5-10 years from now. I just don’t see anything else on the market that is truly better for under $150k, just ones that are different.
This is so true. I feel like it would be crazy to trade away a vehicle that has been this great, especially considering early pricing.

As I traded in my Gen1 R1S after a little more than 2 years to get a Gen2 but this time a lease, I have 2 more years with it. Would love to get another R1S or maybe an R2 depending on what life has in store for me.

Unless they get a service center closer than 3 hours from me I can't see keeping it past the warranty period which for me would be next year.

Yeah - a nearby service center is key. Luckily mine is just 20 minutes away.

How long do you plan to keep your Rivian?

No plan. I have no idea. Right now it's forever because there's nothing on the market to replace it, but that can change. I don't change my life around based on fears like the suspension, but I did just had an extended warranty that takes me to 2032 or around 130k miles bumper to bumper.

If someone made an equally great mid-size truck, I'd jump on it instantly. But the R1T is a unicorn in a sea of electrics that want to pretend to be old-think ICE, and probably won't have a replacement. There's no room in my life for an SUV, worst of both worlds, I'd rather just go back to a car if I have to.
