No, I’m not trying to suspend my R1T, though that would be pretty cool.

What I’m thinking is using the accessory ports to support a hammock rack that could be used if no trees are available. Basically, if you have a long pole mounted to both of the front accessory ports, would you have to worry about the pulling the far one out of the roof? Thanks to the magic of leverage, the upward force on the far port would be higher than the downward force on the near port, so are there any specs or anecdotes about how much force it would take to rip the port off the truck?

Yes, I know there are a variety of other option for using a hammock without trees, this just seems like it could potentially be a pretty slick way to do it.

What an awesome idea! Instead of using the pole across a crossbar, I’m thinking putting the pole a distance from the truck and attaching one end of the hammock to the loop at the end of one crossbar and anchoring the pole (somehow).

Maybe two poles in an A-frame with a secure line to a stake farther away?

Yeah, that ‘somehow’ is the tricky part! I originally had this idea when I was driving a Ram with a long bed, so my thought was to just hang the hammock diagonally across the bed from a ladder rack or something. Sadly the bed in the R1T wouldn’t quite work for that…

I bet you could rig up some sort of mounting pole to the hitch receiver, and hang a hammock between that and the rear roof crossbar. Even if the accessory ports can’t handle upward force, I’m sure they were tested for rearward force for loads that catch the wind.

The easy solution is to just keep hammock stand in the gear tunnel, but what’s the fun in the easy solution?

Hear me out, don't say No... What about a tree?

Trees aren't real?
Oh, they’re real; there’s just not a whole lot of them in places like The Desert, Grasslands, and Above The Tree Line, and even when they’re around, they’re not always in convenient places.

I can't put an exact number on it but I can confirm that they can handle a lot of pulling force.

I transported a queen size mattress on the roof and didn't secure it as well as I should have. When I got on the interstate, the wind blew the mattress vertical like a sail.

I am not sure how lbs of force it was, but it was a lot. After I pulled over I checked out the stats and I was burning 2 kwh per mile (4x normal). Someone might be able to use that data point to get a ballpark number.

By the way, the vehicle pulled that 60"x80" parachute at 60mph like it was nothing. I only noticed what was going on because someone honked and I then looked up through the glass roof. Ohh ****

The crossbars showed no evidence of trauma. My ego was somewhat damaged by the experience though.
