Fine. I also hope they're thinking about 'future proofing' the hardware too, not just software. It's all very well but if the build quality is shite and thing like suspension, bushes etc start to fall apart, then it's a high power computer on wheels, but the wheels ain't working!

Not a dig, just an opinion.

I’ll be upset? About what, exactly?
Well, the assertion that your vehicle may use a Russian GNSS seems to have triggered a touch of xenophobia, so I assumed the use of a Chinese GNSS may do the same.

Yeah, it's potentially a huge problem, since Russia deliberately tampers with the signal - they are using this as part of their hybrid anti-West strategy.
To be fair, the US has the same capability with GPS, which is the exact reason GLONASS and BeiDou exist.

It is reasonable to be concerned with technology provided by countries with governments who are actively trying to take us down. Neither of those you mentioned are our friends, and I try as much as possible to avoid any technology produced in those places. (I admit, it is pretty impossible to avoid all of it, but I still try.)

Sure, be concerned. But sticking your head in the sand and pretending it doesn't exist because you don't want it to is idiotic.

For clarification, I am NOT talking about you...

I think you also need to include the US on the list of countries who are trying to "take us down" and are "not our friends".
Beware of all government sponsored tech.

I am not sure I understand this point, but I will agree that government control is bad, and I don't want any government monitoring or controlling me. Google is bad enough, but at least they cannot put me in jail when they decide they don't like me.

That's fair. Head in sand is never good.

It's naive to think that all of the AI from Google, Palantir, Amazon, xAI, etc is not being used to monitor and control (and yes, put people in jail).

We are drifting way off topic but I am curious how AI use can get me put in jail. It certainly can lie and deceive, and convince people to do bad things, but AI use alone doesn't result in jail. Human behavior does, of course.

You might ask the people (citizens and non-citizens) who have been put in jail by ICE (not the engine) who were tracked and monitored by AI.

The Gen 3 hardware and LiDAR are perfect examples of earlier contrarian comments. If R2 does not provide for a FREE upgrade path from the initial builds to Gen 3 plus LiDAR it ain't future proof! And that includes sufficient compute power to handle the ever-increasing software requirements.

Rivian has already said there is no upgrade path per InsideEVs. Even if I were to get a Gen 3 + Lidar version of the R2, I wouldn't consider it future proof.

There always seems to be some technological advancement we will be missing that they didn't think of today. They will solve it in Gen 4 or Gen 5. On and on it goes. For all we know the launch version of Lidar doesn't turn out to be good enough.
