Now that I've taken ownership of the R1S, it's going to take time to get used to the idiosyncrasies of the vehicle, I get that. But I'm not sure if I'll ever get used to how loud the AC compressor is. My question is: is there a way to *not* start the AC until the car is in Drive/Reverse/etc.? I don't need the compressor to spin up every time I step inside the car; only when I'm ready to start driving. Related topic: there is a local drive-in theater that I would very much like to visit; would you think the jet engine turbine that doubles as the AC compressor would disturb near-by movie watchers?

I believe the only way you could possibly do that is by turning the HVAC off completely, then turning it on again after you start driving.

From my experience it is only loud for a few minutes when I first hop in after it's been sitting in the hot sun. I think by the time you got to the drive in it would be done with that.

Turn HVAC/AC off when you park, it should stay off next key cycle.

65 sounds like 140 decibles=R1S air compressor
140 decibles=jet turbine

We have a tie.

Mine used to do this. It doesn’t anymore after replacing a faulty humidity sensor. Something to ask the SC about.
Thanks for the tip, I went ahead and filed a service ticket.

Humidity sensors don't make noise, that just justifies to me that the sound is the right noise. Your humidity sensor probably just made it run harder.

I've had my R1S for 6 months, today was the first time I've heard the crazy AC noise (from cooling the car down from a 110 cabin temp after being parked). It's a lot louder than I expected, I could feel it in the pedals, but from these posts on the forums, I know that's just expected when it's under heavy load. I also noticed it went away very quickly once I started moving (so I'm guessing it's related to condenser pressure which drops when it gets some airflow)

Interesting. The thing is I do not know anyone else that has a Rivian, so I cannot gauge what is "loud". All I know is that it is very loud in the garage, and when I parked it at my next door neighbor's house, my partner could hear the sound from our home. Even when the cabin temp is normal and acceptable, there is still a significant (but lower) sound coming out of the AC compressor.

Here's the video that I sent into Rivian for the service ticket. Thoughts?

^yep, isn’t that what you’re describing?
No, the point is whenever the AC runs hard it's loud. A bad humidity sensor will make it run hard, but also hot weather and full sun will make it run hard.

Loud is normal. If it's loud, and it's hot, it's normal.

I’m not saying you for sure have the same problem, I’m saying I had the exact same symptom and it’s been fixed. YMMV

Have you had 90+ Degree weather yet after the fix? I've only experienced loud noise/heavy load when outdoor temps are in the 90+ range. I got mine at the end of the summer last year so did not get too many hot days under my belt yet for 2024.

That does not sound as bad as mine when it's doing it's loud thing. Maybe camera does not pick up the noise as well.

Nope, no 90°+ in the PNW. But that never stopped the compressor from running full tilt regardless of conditions.

Isn’t this what OP stated?

“Even when the cabin temp is normal and acceptable, there is still a significant (but lower) sound coming out of the AC compressor.”

I never experienced the loud noise until a few weeks ago where in the Sacramento area we were 90+. So for the last 8 months I though I had won the AC noise lottery.

So now I am not sure if mine is normal or acting up.
