@Skirotica -

I haven't noticed any TuneIN-specific ads, only those that crop on the station I'm listening to.

I also found out that their search is very specific. For instance, it returned no results for KJIVE but KJIV worked like a charm.

Do i have to subscribe to tunein to stop getting Denver area clothing ads (I am not in Denver)?
The ads are part of that station's audio stream. They are not added by TuneIn.

Oh I absolutely agree with you. But I also don't blame Rivian for trying to avoid the compromises I'm sure they have to make when they choose a 3rd party system. It seems the safest route these days is to just include one or both of those (CP/ AA) and make people happy. It's a bit stubborn to think they could have equally good software that quickly.

My current vehicle is a 2017 Toyota Tacoma and they didn't adopt CP until the 2016 model year. Honda was also slow to add it. They could get away with it for awhile because they have been around so long, but even those companies had to relent because their customers wanted it.
There’s no compromise in using better solutions that what they’ll ever be able to do.

Of course there is. Anytime you don't have complete control over your own system you compromise something. Could be security or a visual look you would prefer to keep. Could be options you want to add but AA/ CP don't allow for, etc... That doesn't mean it's not worth it to accept those compromises sometimes.

I have a higher end Pioneer receiver installed in my Tacoma and it has wireless CP, which is ok I guess. But it has some of the same technical glitches I had with one of the very first CP units years ago. Sometimes the audio stops but on the screen it shows it's still playing. Sometimes it freezes up and crashes entirely. Sometimes it doesn't recognize my phone is connected (wired or wireless) and the only way to fix it is to disconnect, turn the truck off and on again, restart my phone and start over. The native Pioneer software never does any of that when playing music. AA/CP are far from perfect but enough people like them it's probably worth it.

On the center screen under Settings / Apps / Alexa

When they delivered your vehicle they should have walked you through setting this up as part of the onboarding process.
Oh wait. they did. But my wife has the prime account, so i said i'd set it up later. Then i went "ooh, shiny vehicle" and forgot all about it.

Tunein does have a Grateful Dead Station (GDRADIO): https://tunein.com/radio/GDRADIO---Grateful-Dead-Radio-s54607/

I actually prefer Tunein over Spotify because they have most (if not all) of my weird, eclectic mix of radio stations. Radio Woodstock is the only one they don't have. My personal preference is for stations that span a wide range of genres.
Agreed on eclectivity, I just wish the interface was more stable. Always a jab fest to get it going then it craps out as soon as the signal drops out and does a poor job at recovering, launching another jab fest. But to be fair, this is pretty much the same behavior I experience on my iPhone TuneIn app. Using it though CarPlay is even worse as the phone’s usually in my pocket when the app takes header requiring a restart (which you can’t do in CarPlay).

What I don't get is why the thing doesn't have an AM radio. Unless I'm missing it? Even on the FM, I try to tune to local channels to listen to sports broadcasts and it won't work because it says my location prohibits it. Why would it block me from local radio stations?

EVs often don't have AM because something in the HV system interferes with AM reception. This isn't unique to Rivian. Tesla had AM, at some point, and they dropped it, for example.

What station are you trying to listen to on FM where you get a "location prohibited" message? Are you sure you're using FM and not Tune-in?

What I meant is CP (not familiar with AA) is not a compromise as it’s a better solution for a lot of things and still allows Rivian to do whatever they want with their UI. The screen is big enough that it could only use some of it. In addition, CP doesn’t have to be used and in that case does not use any visual real estate.
I’ve personally never had non native CarPlay (in 5 or 6 cars now) and never had problems (not saying there couldn’t be any).

I agree with you since CP is normally optional. It would make so many people happy I’m not sure why they just don’t add it. Those of us who don’t care that much could use it or not use it. I say there are always compromises because I’m sure when you integrate any 3rd party app/ UI/ etc you have to open things up to them you may not want to, or even make monetary commitments that lock you in indefinitely. I have not seen any manufacturer offer CP/ AA and then pull it later on…

I had the exact same issues I have with my current Pioneer receiver’s CP on a 2017 Honda Ridgeline with it built into their system, so that is why I have just never been that impressed with it. I do like to use it on longer trips because I like the way it integrates Waze. Before I replaced my Tacoma’s OEM receiver I was also fine just using the basic Entune UI that was native on all Toyotas. It was plain but it worked.
