Inspection time: scissor lift/jack pucks?

Hi,

My R1S is coming up on its first anniversary and it's time for his first inspection. I called a local tire store that does inspections, and they said they can handle Rivians. However, when I asked if they have the pucks, they said they use scissor lifts that go right onto the frame, and they have pits so they only lift high enough to take the tire out (NY state law). I'm clueless on this topic, should I be calling around elsewhere?

I'd be a little skeptical. "The frame" is different on a Rivian and many electric vehicles. There is no specific structure to lift unless you're doing it on suspension components. The "frame" is where the pucks sit in and it is somewhat recessed.

Question - what "inspection" are you doing and why? Like a tire rotation? Try Discount Tire? The chain should be familiar with Rivians and I believe they are even a sponsor here. Other than a rotation every 7-8K miles ish, there's no "tire inspection" that you need to do.

New York State requires yearly safety inspections on all vehicles and legally requires inspectors to pull one tire off for break inspections.

For those in the Hudson Valley, I just called an auto shop nearby (High End Auto in Poughkeepsie) and they've worked on Rivians before, so I'll be stopping by next week to get it done.

^ they can just put a regular floor jack under the suspension of the front left wheel and jack up one or two inches as required to pull the tire off. No need to jack up the whole vehicle. Many here have done that with zero damage to the vehicle when the jack saddle is properly placed.

I strongly believe that every Rivian owner should carry a set of pucks in their vehicle at all times (and believe Rivian should have included them). I carry a set of 4 plus one XL from JackPucks.com. You just never know when you're going to have a blowout and are forced to use a local tire place that's never seen a Rivian before. Without the proper pucks and YOU making sure they place them properly they could damage your ride.

I print the attached sheet and take it, with my set of pucks, to my local tire place for both my PA state inspection and to have the tires rotated. It works.

My advice is to take the plastic panels off altogether for a four-point lift as per Rivian. Pretty straightforward and easy enough to do yourself before heading to the shop.

Discount Tire (the national chain, not the Southern California group) used to sponsor this forum, with a headquarters representative who was active and responsive on the forum.

The executives pulled that service about 8-12 months ago. My impression is that the quality of Rivian service at the national Discount Tire chain has worsened somewhat since then. We now hear some alarming stories from Discount Tire customers! Most stores probably still do good work, but consistency is important....

@Mark_AZR1T helped me educate my local Costco Tire managers about our Rivians. Our local Costco now seems adept at meeting our needs. Thanks, Mark!
