Feels like Rivian will have stiff competition in the $40K-70K realm for this hot hatch and the Ioniq 5 is available already and first with NACS at that. Thoughts?

The N is supposed to be a terrific car.

They are also just about to release the XRT spec, which is made for light off-roading. They will be competitors with the R3, but there are also more buyers looking for that type of vehicle at that price than the R1 range.

Owned a V1 R1T, have a preorder in for an R2. Presently drive an Ioniq 5N. There are some quirks and the SW is nowhere near Rivian’s, but, dang, this is a stupidly fun car. Tons of room, very fast (second to the as yet unseen Quad https://www.motortrend.com/features/fastest-suvs/ ), but it’s not just about torque / 0-60, it’s an actual fun car to drive fast.

Love the seats. Love having a slick top (yeah, I’m weird). Love “shifting” it. Love tossing it around in silent mode and with the gears. Really like the steering and a very nice wheel.

Just plain stupid fun - and almost no one knows how speedy it actually js

But the range / battery is some weak sauce. I’m at 80% right now and that’s 186 or so miles. And I see 2.4 kW/mile when I’m not hooning it. And I wish the big brakes had a bit more initial bite, but I figure that’s just some pads away.

Also, pretty sure the R3 is WAY smaller. I’ll still probably go after one of those also as we have the BRaptor and a minivan when we need more space. :)

XRT is already in the wild. Saw one today. I would love to have that trim over the SEL, but it would definitely cost more. I scored an insane $59/mo zero down lease deal on a ‘24 SEL for 13-months while we wait for R2.

I hope the R3 has battery shielding like the R1! The Ioniq 5 is amazing car, and road trip vehicle because it's super fast charging, but I'm afraid to take mine on anything more "off road" than mild gravel. There's been a few stories of impacted battery compartments leading to very expensive repair bills ($40k).

The way I see the competition is between these and ICE, not necessarily these against each other. The numbers seem to show that when EV sales increase, ICE sales go down by roughly the same amount, which tells me there is plenty of room for more interesting EVs.

Acknowledging that we're comparing a vehicle that exists to one that doesn't, my family is eagerly looking forward to trading in our '22 Ioniq 5 for an R3X. I'm actually quite unhappy with the I5 when comparing the software and "driver safety" features to the R1S. Hyundai is way more of a nanny state and has put us in dangerous situations before. I'll allow that things may have changed on later versions and I have a limited, not an N or an XRT, but we can't wait for this thing in our driveway to turn into an R3X.

Oh, also, I'll pay for Connect+, but never for the Hyundai's $300/year connection to their crappy app.

The XRT is cool but low on power vs R3X and Mach E rally. It’s cool for sure but more of an appearance package…

I think it will be cross shopped more with the R2. Dimension wise it’s probably right in between r2/r3

The market is large enough for both cars to be very successful, and I hope they are. The Hyundai Group has probably done more than any other OEM to move the needle on EV adoption.

We've had a '23 I5 Limited AWD for almost 3 years. It's a really nice car. Ride's very smooth and has plenty of power. Software is the weak link for the I5.

They gone from one of the hardest to get EVs to stacked up on dealer lots. Sounds like some dealers are leasing them at huge losses.

I would expect based on the timing of first R3 deliveries (couple years away) many more compelling EV's in this price range will be available from multiple players not just Hyundai.

It would be interesting what announced products from the Japanese brands, Hyundai/Kia, and even Tesla. I'm sure the American brands will have some as well, but design wise they might not be that compelling.

From seeing the R2 and r3 in person, I think the r3 is just a fastback version of the r2. The front sheet metal and height look the same to me.

Daughter and wife own ‘24 IONIQ 5’s, the ‘19 Kona was relegated to me for grocery-getting while the R1T is used for work.
Once my R13 comes the Kona goes.
Wife doesn’t like the 5 any better than the Kona or her ‘17 Bolt and misses the heated wheel , rear wiper, and 6” shorter size.
The style is a winner as are the assist features.
Outstanding is the reclining rear seats and extra cargo space for bikes, and
the flush door handles.
After living with these and tge Rivian’s, we’re noticing how ugly so many door handles are- along with some seriously ugly grilles and tear ends.
Today’s question is - has anyone seen ordering info for the 3?
This story does not

Daughter’s ‘20 volt was t boned and she got a ‘24 5.
My ‘17 bolt was abused so much by me at work so I took the wife’s ‘19 Kona EV as a grocery getter while the R1T gars abused at work.
She picked up a ‘24 5.
She misses the heated wheel of the bolt and rear wiper on it and the Kona.
While the 9” shorter Bolt and 6” shorter Kona were easier to park, the 5’s reclining / sliding rear seats are unique and allow way more cargo.
The flush handles and clean bodies of the 5 and R1T have us noticing how ugly so many door handles, grilles, and rear ends have become.
Oh yes, todays question:
When can I get my R3 order in?
