I received my new iPhone 15 Pro yesterday, and it appears that while in the Apple MagSafe case, it will not charge anywhere on the pad. Additionally, removing it from the case, and if I position it *perfectly*, it will start the charge. I presume this is due to the additional height from the “camera bump”.

Rant: I want a smartphone with camera function. Not a smartcamera with phone functionality…

Any solutions here? Will one of the aftermarket charging pads work better? I’ve never found the Rivian pad to be particularly good to begin with.

I have one of the aftermarket pads with the magsafe pucks. It works really well due to the magsafe. I would recommend it but I do not remember which company I bought it from. Its the one with the wood cover piece that has the topographic map on it and the granola bowl. Easy to install and still works great 4 months later.

Thanks for the rec. That’s the Soonish one, I believe. I was already looking at that one as well.

I know Rivian is working on a fix, I just hope its retroactive so it works with the old charging pads.

my opinion is that the built-in pad is overengineered and undercustomizable. I’d rather it be a simple 2x charge spot that can be removed and see a 12v outlet below, where I could put my own 60W adapter.
barring that, something closer to the stowNcharge solution

Thanks all - ordered the Soonish premium charger. Also put in a waitlist for the Stowncharge as I like the sliding door solution.

Another company is twraps. Sadly the Rivian wireless charger is pretty lousy. The Twraps pad has better MagSafe pucks and charges two phones via one USB-C cable and has a cut out for the bulbous cameras. It works great for me

While I liked the aesthetic design of this one, it did not use Apple MagSafe pucks, so it’s a much slower charge, unfortunately.

Long standing problem.

i had an iphone 11 pro when i got my truck last year, it would charge with perfect placement, but wasn't really usable, too hard to place perfectly when driving. My wife had the 12 pro, it would not charge. Upgraded to the 14 pro. It won't charge.

I have a 3d printer, I printed the design available here. It works completely as expected. The designer sells Rivian upgrades like this, and is active on the forum, got input from members as he put the design together.

My print, installed in my truck

For the record, I just got the iPhone 15 Pro Max yesterday and I can confirm it works great with our charger:
https://twraps.com/products/magsafe-compatible-dual-wireless-charger-for-rivian-r1t-r1s

I am yet to measure max power on the iPhone 15 with our gen2 pucks (we just released them about a week ago, haven't officially announced it yet), but I will test in Monday and report if it's any different than gen1 pucks.
Would be great to get more info. My understanding is that in ios16 Apple changed to only use “certified” (whatever that means) pucks to get 15W charging. Otherwise they are limited to ~7, I believe.

Would be great to get confirmation if your new pucks run at 15W.

That limitation has been on since ever as far as I know, so I am not overly optimistic in this regard. With that said, just to clarify - the pucks themselves support 15W per puck or 20W if both pucks are running at the same time (i.e. 20W is the limitation of the charging module in v2).
Another interesting thing is that if I give it enough input (recently tested in a Tesla Model 3's USB-C port) I was able to consistently get 10W of charging power per phone using my previous phone - iPhone 14 Pro.. So I am not sure why iPhone 14 let 10W when it's supposed to limit it to 7.5W but it did. At the same time, I was able to get 12.5W on an Apple OEM puck (the travel charger), so not much of a difference.

I still use v1 pucks in my R1S, but tomorrow I will grab a set of v2 from the office and report if I measure any difference at all between v1 and v2 on the Rivian with iPhone 15.

As said above, the current Rivian charging pad is basically a paperweight. I never once got my iPhone 14 Pro Max to charge. Immediately upon going with an Adventure High Tech charger, this problem went away.

It's apparent that the Rivian one is way over-engineered for its intended purpose. That space is only large enough for two max-sized phones to sit in one orientation. I don't know how fast my phone charges when on the pad however, even with streaming bluetooth music, my phone always has more charge than when it was placed on the pad.

Based on feedback I've seen on this forum for both Twraps and Adventure High Tech, you can't go wrong with either choice. Make the change, be happy, and don't constantly worry about a solution from Rivian that's perpetually someone s00n.
