It's unlikely that they don't know what happened. If they really don't know, they probably don't know how to maintain a car. I would walk.

I guess it could have been done by someone else borrowing the car or at service.

I wonder if someone decided to jack it up by that spot, but without removing the cover I would not purchase this.

I see a lot of mixed advice given. This does appear to be a low-risk issue, and I'd personally weigh the risk against how great the deal is. That does appear to be

In the process of buying an R1T and this is on the underbody. This is the front of the truck, under the frunk. I just can't tell what is going on, and if this is just a road debris issue, or something more nefarious going on from behind the cover? Any thoughts or ideas?

I see a lot of mixed advice given. This does appear to be a low-risk issue, and I'd personally weigh the risk against how great the deal is; there is of course risk with any private party purchase regardless of visible damage. That does appear to be carbon fiber on a truck with the all-terrain package and that's a tough cover that Rivian has reported can support the weight of the truck on a rock (not a high speed hit). If this is indeed a all-terrain plate, I agree with others stating it would take a hard hit to break it, but that doesn't mean something is broke.
The reality is that no one on this forum is going to know for sure if this is an issue, and your service center might tell you they need to open it too before giving an opinion. I understand the seller's reluctance to put too much into a distant buyer, but maybe you can take these pics into your local SC and ask if one of their staff could give you 5 minutes to look and comment on "unofficially." The discolorization at the edges could be condensation, trapped water slowly leaking out, or it could be a vehicle fluid, many of which are colored.
There are lots of great deals on Gen1 vehicles out there for those with some patience; I bought mine used and have never regretted my purchase. Good luck to you, whatever path you decide to take.
