Just picked up the RIT. Vin 155xx

I posted this under a different thread, but thought I’d make a separate post.

Im coming from an Etron, which is one of the smoothest and quietest vehicles around. This thing doesn’t drive like a truck. Feels very nimble and we all know about the acceleration. Drivers plus worked great on the 405

Issues I’ve already noticed.

1. Dent in the tailgate. Unfortunately didn’t notice it until I parked somewhere where there was more light(car was parked in the shade at service center). Immediately opened up a ticket. We’ll see what they say.

2. Small dent on one of the wheels. Opened up ticket.

3. Dirt under PPF on one of the panels.

4. Car definitely wants to veer right. Will see if I’m imagining this or not as I drive it more.

5. Over bumpier roads the passenger seat was shaking.

6. There’s definitely a fair amount of wind noise above 65 mph. Not sure if it’s normal or not.

I’ve submitted tickets for all of these and have already received a call back so we’ll see what happens.

There are small panel alignment issues. Will prob have service take A look.

Question about the App: how do you turn climate on remotely? It’s grayed out on the app.
Thanks.

sounds like all typical Rivian problems from factory. Why it’s still an issue is beyond me. Good luck with service. No answer for your app issues.

Pulling right is normal. Wind noise is becoming more normal. See if you can identify if it’s coming from your front two windows, the fixed triangular portion.

Good luck with the dents. It seems sometimes Rivian will either replace the panel (if applicable), or do PDR.

How’s your panel alignment?

Definitely some minor misalignments. I dont know what to compare it to. There was another white truck there and they had misalignments in different place. Will take pictures and see if they can do anything about it during my January service appt.

It seems as though Rivian is following the Tesla formula of just kicking trucks out of the factory and letting the SC’s follow up with panel alignment issues, wind noise, cocked steering wheels, etc.

That strategy was developed by Ford as part of his "mass production" process. Build first, correct problems with each vehicle later. But most of the world has since moved to Toyoda's system of "lean production", or at least some reasonable facsimile thereof, where problems are identified and corrected *during* the build, so that by the time the vehicle comes off the line it should it shouldn't need rework.

While it's easy to see how Musk could take a different view of this lesson from history as part of his effort to turn out cars en masse, it's not likely that Scaringe lacks the knowledge of how car manufacturing has changed over the past century and how that change has lead to far better quality and reliability in the finished product.

It's tempting to compare Rivian to Tesla on every point, because they are both EV makers, but in context it's often a poor comparison. These assembly issues are things that arise at ALL auto manufacturers, and the real differentiator is how they move forward by improving their process/quality or by just accepting it as something that can be fixed after the fact if someone complains. I believe Rivian has shown that they're trying to address these things during the manufacturing process, if for no other reason than to reduce the expensive post-sale service costs which are labor-intensive.
