I recommend you go touch an R2. There are also differences in the tactile feel of the interior and the quality of some of the interior components. Frunk is smaller.
No fold down gate on the rear of the R2.

Once you’ve sat in & touched one, your opinion might change.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with the R2, it’s just not as nice of an interior as the R1.
These attributes might sway your decision.

FWIW: I struggle with the exact situation and decision. As you stated, First World problem.

Lack of air suspension is a good thing. My front dampers just went at 62000 miles and it’s $5800 to replace. I do not drive off road at all. No good will warranty repair offered. I’d dump it if you’re getting close to the end of your warranty.

My warranty is good until May 2028 for comprehensive and 2032 for battery and motors. I'm only at 2 years/20k miles currently. So waiting for Gen 3 is likely what I'll do at minimum.

If size is not an issue, I think the R2 is the sweet spot. If you don’t need the extra storage, it seems like you’re in a good spot to get the R2. The R1 is incredible but there are a lot of expensive parts that can fail out of warranty so even the peace of mind I’m getting a fresh warranty with the R2 would be a great plus.

To the topic of this forum:
- I too wonder if I should switch to an R2
- I saw the initial R2 last year, and the frunk may not fit a bag of golf clubs...the R1's can sometimes fit two, pending the sizes of the golf bags.
- I think I will keep my Gen1 and wait for a quad Gen3 or keep my R1 forever and get an R3X

Side note on the finance side - yes post warranty, it could get expensive, especially with any suspension issue in the future.

I highly recommend to all if you that are close to your 60K Mile warranty to pay for the comprehensive pre-warranty checkup. In NorCal it is around $320. I have a Gen1 R1S that was built in Nov of 2022, but has a VIN for 2023, and is in the low 500's. I think I am easily in the first 5000 R1S's made.

I took my R1S in for the comprehensive checkup at a little over 57K miles. And this is what they are doing for me:

- Replacing Lower Control Arms
- Cooling lines
- Some major nut/bolt
- I asked about the subframe of the Gen1's (A known problem with welds cracking)
- They replaced the front subframe to the Gen2 retrofit (car drives so much more smoothly)
- there is a long list of associated one-time use parts for the Gen2 subframe--too long to list
- A realignment was done on all four wheels
- This all took a day and half to get done (service is improving greatly--totally happy)
- It is going back at the end of the month as they also want to replace the half shafts and bushings

This early build (knock on wood) had only cosmetic issues. Totally happy with Rivian---I know that may not be a common occurrence.

I will be buying the extended warranty from xcare once all the warranty work is done ( Xcelerate Auto | EV Finance, Leasing, Fleet Management & XCare Warranty) I tend to keep cars until they break---but I am also a gadget guy and love the new tech coming out on the Rivian's!
