Key FOB for R2 without Launch Package?

We take our fob when there's a chance that we might have to valet the car - they do understand the key card (and there are printed instructions on it), but the fob is just so much easier. There was a post a year or two ago about their door getting scratched as the valet rubbed the key card all over the door (everywhere but the door handle apparently) and kept rubbing harder when the car didn't unlock.

Of course, last Friday we left it with valet in NYC and we forgot to take the fob with us so I gave them the keycard I keep in my wallet and there were no problems. I don't think I'd spend the $$$ on a fob if it didn't come with the car, but, at least for us, it's a "nice to have."

We have the FOB and the bracelet (who remembers those) for our R1, but the fob never leaves home unless we're taking the truck to the service center or it's going in for it's annual Virginia safety inspection. We carry the key cards in our wallets as backups, but in our nearly 4 years with the truck the iPhone has worked flawlessly.

Anyone who deals with random cars day after day will be able to figure out what needs to be done for any car. Most of this stuff is pretty intuitive. And if they are not familiar, either because it is a brand new model or software version, or some exotic super car, a quick google search or asking the owner is all that's needed.

If you're ever concerned about it, ask the attendant/valet before leaving if they have any questions or need a demo. I'm sure most of them will just be able to figure it out.

Agreed, but the person with whom you drop the car (and show them how the keycard works) is often not the same person who will be bringing the car when you pick it up. The last thing I want is to have the attendant frustrated or having issues when he gets to the car. This is where the fob shines - It simply works without any questions.

Question since I don’t have a Rivian: I assume that R2 has a valet mode (like Tesla) that doesn’t allow access to glove boxes etc?

And the R2 glove boxes and center storage bin don't lock so even when we get valet mode those spaces won't be secure, but at least the frunk and rear hatch won't be able to be opened. I wonder if they'd be able to prevent R2 rear window from being lowered in a valet mode?

When I picked up my R2 the delivery guy said that there are plans to add pins to lock the glove boxes. They do not appear to be electronic latches so it will be interesting to see if that actually happens.

Interesting...I can't imagine that they'd retrofit the '26 model years to do that so I'm expecting that our R2 will never have a locking option unless one of our clever sponsors find a way to do it.

When the rear hatch is closed, is there any way to pull up the floor? I imagine the door covers the edge so you couldn't simply lift it, and I don't think the hinge bends backwards to pick it up from the middle. Maybe putting the seats down and lifting from the front edge?

That's no longer an opportunistic crime, you'd probably have to be targeted for anyone to bother trying that in a valet situation, but would be good to know if the sub-trunk is securable.

Two and a half years ago, all the complaints were that the R1 didn't have a "real" glove box. So RJ went and surprised everyone when he unveiled the R2 by showing it had TWO glove boxes. Somehow it seemed inevitable that people would still find something to complain about. If they had a lock on the glove box then the complaint would be that the box is made of plastic and a lock won't stop anyone. Or that the lock didn't have a real key ("which even my 1976 Vega had").

I believe the center console in the R2 still locks, like in the R1. A PIN-to-lock or a valet mode is just software, so that can be added in an OTA if Rivian decides to. But I don't think that's anything they've explicitly promised at this time.

As with spare tires, glove boxes with mechanical locks are becoming a thing of the past, like it or not. Their original purpose has long been obsolete.

Rivian has had to make literally a million decisions in designing this vehicle. All of those were made with business reasons in mind. No one is going to know even a fraction of what went into all those decisions, but chances are they thought about whether they should put a lock on there or not, looked at the added cost and complexity, considered why it might be needed and how many people actually use the lock, and decided they weren't going to do it. If this is a dealbreaker for you, then find a different vehicle. I found that I adapted quite well to having just the center console in the R1, and I don't miss a glove box at all. I suspect that I will hardly use the glove boxes in my R2 and they will just accumulate rarely-used junk like in any other car I've owned.

Yeah, I don’t normally lock my glove box (or glove compartment, as we always called them…). But I do think about it when someone I don’t know is going to have my car. I am not usually a suspicious person, but I do think about the potential for someone to take my garage door opener and find my address on my registration and insurance docs that are in the glove box. Or if I have something of a little value that I want to leave in the car for whatever reason - maybe my wallet or a watch or rings if I am heading out to hike or swim - it is nice to have a lockable option.

If someone is breaking into your car when you are out for a hike or a swim, they will pry open your glove box and tear your dash to shreds. I learned living in NYC years ago it's better NOT to lock the glove box....YMMV.
