R1T,
I bought a lifetime XM subscription back in 2006 with a new Honda. I have transferred it a couple times to other vehicles but found out yesterday this is not an option for Rivian. Anyone else have this issue? If so, is there a work around? I really don't want to pay an additional subscription since I already purchased the "lifetime" product. I can obviously blue tooth from my phone but that has some limitations from a convivence standpoint.

I also have the same x the lifetime subscription is only for true satellite. The Rivian uses an app via data from the cell service. It’s not satellite. I got a deal to add app access for 2.99 a month. The lifetime subscription predates apps.

Interesting. My subscription also includes streaming on multiple devices so you'd think I'd be able to just log in on the vehicle. Right now the offer for my R1T is $5/month for the first year then jumps to $18 - $25 which is nuts.

Try calling back and do some negotiating. The original plan never had apps. I never was able to use the app until I got the Rivian. I still have the original Sat radio service on my 20 year old G35.

I just checked and they coded me to the Platinum plan but flagged it with the lifetime subscription. Cost after taxes is $4.67.

I believe there was a previous thread regarding lifetime subscriptions and a few were able to get it transferred to their Rivian. I've got one of those old lifetime subs from the 90s, I have not yet tried to transfer it to the Rivian.

The Rivian has a radio ID like a traditional XM set up in a car. So even though it's an "app" it's not an app like say when using a pc browser or mobile app to listen to XM.

Did the transfer apply only because those vehicles have XM satellite receivers in the car? Rivians don’t have one. It is streaming only.

if you can login on your phone and stream it then there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from logging in on the Rivian. It’s the same thing.

Did XM even exist in the 90s? Lol

I thought you could only transfer the lifetime service 3 times. I still have mine on a vehicle from 2005 that I sold 7 years ago. But I still have and use the free streaming using the app on my phone.

If we figure this out it would be great to transfer mine as well. Granted I never understood why they wouldn't want people to transfer service when they could just charge a fee so they make some money every time you move the lifetime service.

Well satellite radio division of the company formed in 1999, but didn’t start offering services till 2001. This was XM. Sirius launched in 2002. XM merged with Sirius in 2008. Unfortunately the quality hasn’t changed since for the actual satellite radio. It’s like listening to low quality MP3’s from the 90’s so I can see his confusion. 😁

I transferred mine with no problem. There was a transfer fee (maybe $25; can't remember for sure). I can use XM in the car and am able stream on my phone. There is no monthly fee.

If you really want the satellite service - like I did with Sirius - just buy an XM receiver with Bluetooth and transfer your lifetime plan to that. You'll have to find a way to power it (there are multiple options, like an OBD-II adapter), and mount the antenna on the roof, and just like that: XM in the middle of nowhere, like it was meant to be.

I wonder why that worked for you. I tried to transfer ($35 fee, BTW) with XM Customer Service since it wouldn't let me do it online. After much back and forth, the rep told me the R1T wasn't compatible with my lifetime plan - which seems pretty lame to me. Of course they offered to sign me up for another subscription which I declined.

I got it when it first came out, maybe it was very early 2000s, too long ago to remember!

R1T,
Well, I guess persistence and finding the right person to talk to pays off. I tried SiriusXM customer service again yesterday and expressed my confusion why the R1T was not compatible with my lifetime subscription. The rep created a case with their "Corporate Solutions Team" to provide an answer. To my surprise, they got back to me today and provided a solution. Rather than transfer the service, they simply cancelled my previous lifetime subscription on the old vehicle and created a new one for the R1T, all for the $35 charge.
One more First World Problem solved. Life can go on.
