Rivian - when you are going to make this thing unlock from our blue tooth phones ???? instead of looking stupid for 2 minutes and sometimes in the rain ????
Talking about feeling stupid... 90% of the time when I come out of the grocery store, walk up to my Gen 1 R1S from the rear, and open the hatch to load groceries, I end up setting off the alarm. Fortunately, Rivian put such crappy horns in it that you can barely hear it!

I'm hoping that help is on the way. From what I understand the next software update will improve unlocking times with the iPhone 14 which is what I have.

It sucks that the Gen2 doesn’t come with a key fob. I’ve never liked PaaS. The card keys are a solid backup but not for daily use. Then their is the wristband key. On the Gen1 you can enable or disable it in the app. Indications are that it works on the Gen2 but you have to call service to get it enabled.

Rivian has successfully taken something that is very easy and made it difficult.

Even though it’s $250, I’d happily buy a key fob. Oh yea, IT’S NEVER IF F***** STOCK!

If it makes you feel better, my model X had the same issue. Sometimes worked, sometimes you have to pull the phone out to get it to work.

I don't use proximity lock/unlock because it's annoying when I'm walking through the garage. I use the FOB manually, and 99 times out of 100, there is a 3-5 second delay between pressing a button on the FOB and the door locking or unlocking.

I was told that there are blind spots in the antennas on the Gen 1's so depending on how you approach the vehicle it could not actuate. Even my Gen 2 doesn't work as good as it can and I'm looking forward to the update that switches it to the better protocol.
While I’d like to see a more technical analysis of this, blind spots could explain my behavior. Sometimes the Rivian unlocks from 15 feet away (too far IMO) and other times I have to pull my phone out from my pants pocket while standing right next to the door.

I feel you. It's not great. I always take my phone out and wake it up as I walk to my Rivian. That usually works.
My bigger complaint is how long it takes to lock when I walk away in a busy parking lot. Sometimes I have to stop 200 ft away and watch until it finally locks.

I know it is not super helpful, but your experience is not reflective of mine or my wife's in either of our gen 1 R1T or gen 2 R1S. On my T, the phone in my back pocket will often not work. If I turn my back to the truck it will, and if it is in a front jacket or front pants pocket, it will always work.

I would suggest you try a couple of things. First, take it out of the case and hold it in your hand when you approach the truck. If it works fine every time then there are a combo of things (case, clothing, pocket, etc.) blocking the signal. If it does NOT work fine every time, try a friend/spouse phone with same. If it does not work fine every time with either of the phones, then you have a vehicle problem and need to put in a service ticket. My 2c. Sorry it is not working well for you.
This is also my experience with Tesla, and I don’t think it is a blocking of signal issue, it is a proximity issue, which is a good thing. You only want it to unlock when the device is as close as possible. On my model 3, the PAOK works EVERY time, but it must be close enough. It will open if it’s in my front pocket, but not my back pocket. If I turn my butt to the car, it will open. I prefer this level of precision even though it is annoying.

I live in a townhouse and my bedroom is directly above my garage. At night I need to close the Rivian app, or turn off Bluetooth, because it will lock and unlock the truck from the bedroom. I can hear the owl/bird chirp when it happens… and it happens 100% of the time, so it’s not the phone or the case, etc. Like others 50/50 if it works while walking up to the truck anywhere else. This leads me to believe that one of the sensors in my Gen1 must be on top of the truck in the small antenna unit for whatever that’s worth.

If my ph. is in my back pocket, I turn around and do a but lift towards the handle that I read about here and comically that does it. I am working on my humor skills and my abilities to cope with many things, and this dance does me well. As I do this, I secretly hope someone is watching and they are horrified at the sight and get in their Ram Deisel and do a "Coal Roll" in reply. Ok, I fail at my social skills, but it gets my door unlocked and keep my sanity.
Namaste?

It's the phone, not the Rivian.
People have been telling me this as well. I'm on a Google Pixel 5.

It's a shit answer and completely asinine that someone should have to upgrade their mobile device to use a vehicle.

The lack of physical access to the vehicle is an abhorrent design flaw.

My experience with Gen 2 R1T the problem has been resolved. Works exactly the same as my 2020 Tesla Y did. Key point is its pretty much line of sight, plus phone settings make a difference. If phone is in back pocket when approaching vehicle, it will not unlock. But if phone is in hand or line of sight, it unlocks every time. However, the phone can be an issue. My wife and I have Samsung Galaxy phones. At times with the Tesla, the phone would be sleeping, and I would have to wake up the phone to unlock the car. Also, the Rivian app has to be open and running in the background (same as Tesla with their app). Bluetooth must be on. There are other phone settings which can also interfere. In my experience, with Gen 2, if it's not unlocking as expected, its most likely the phone, not the R1. I know this does not help Gen 1, which has different electronics, but for new Rivians hopefully its no longer a problem.

Yes it is frustrating. But it is not a design flaw. Its evolution and It's intentional, sort of. Having spent a career in tech and software development there comes a time when new software has to break with older hardware and OS if it is to move forward. The more versions of hardware and OS a piece of software must work with the more expensive it becomes to maintain and limits taking advantage of new hardware and OS capabilities. It's frustrating, but it is reality.

Why not simply use the turn off proximity locking at home feature instead?

You can turn off the proximity lock/lock when you are at home so that doesn't happen.
