What a pain! Thank you for keeping us updated on the status and cause. I was that close to buying the Scosche Connector.

Does that mean this was 100% user error and everyone who poo-poo'd Rivian needs to apologize?
I’d like an engineer’s opinion, but it seems like it was user error and Rivian could mitigate or prevent immobilizing the vehicle.

I think the truck is smart enough that if the driver shuts down with very low State of Charge of the High Voltage battery it should probably prevent any charging of the 12V and disconnect as many loads as possible from the 12V. This should maintain as much charge as possible on both systems for when the vehicle is receiving power. Even if it does already do this, there doesn’t seem to be a published process for resuscitating an R1 which lacks enough 12V power to get the vehicle ready to charge. This means the only option provided to us is to have the vehicle taken to a Rivian Service Center.

I think this is where RIvian could do better: help the driver more when things go wrong. Because things will go wrong whether caused by user error or something else.

Soooo... I've run two blackvue 580w's off the schosch osbii connector for around 6 years and I've never had 12v battery issues in my Model S. That tells me that while OP made an error, Rivian has a severe distance to make up in 12v battery management.

I would like to applaud the original poster @manishie for being brave enough to even mention the problem and to admit fault. This is how we all learn.

I do think that there was one important fact that was brought forward here - namely, some devices draw power even when not "in use". If you have one of those third-party phone chargers installed, or a SXM receiver, or anything else, then there's nothing Rivian can do to prevent you from draining the 12V with these devices. That has happened with my ICE 4Runner too - more than once I've had to jump it because I had an inverter or something else plugged in for only a few hours without thinking that the device was draining my 12V.

However, Rivian *can* improve the software to keep you from shooting yourself in the foot. To be clear, this would be Rivian doing you a favor, not something that is expected or required from the vehicle manufacturer..
