This is the key, imo.

Most people are familiar with ICE refueling, so we're comfortable with it. And as much as I can't wait until I never again have to go get gas, we still know it's only a ~5-10 minute inconvenience. Gas stations are ubiquitous, and refueling is quick.

With EVs, for those of us who haven't lived it, yet, there's uncertainty -- and that can be uncomfortable. A "mistake" isn't just a 5-10 minute inconvenience. You have to find and get to a DCFC, hope it works, and if everything works well it still takes longer.

Over time, this will get better. Partially, from people getting more comfortable with what was previously unknown to them. And partially by EV charging infrastructure continuing to get built out.
Maybe it's just me, but i get more anxious with a low tank and I'm in the City tha. I do with a low charge on my ID.4 I have never trusted the range estimate of an ICE and having it low while sitting on steep hill at a red light always makes me paranoid the gas is going to the side of the tank the fuel pump isn't.

FWIW, the LE we test drove Sunday was presented to us as an actual production vehicle (VIN 7FCTGAAL8NN000047) but had the tonneau locked out.
Definitely conflicting information. I also asked if it was possible to get a LE R1T with a manual tonneau cover, said NOT currently.

This takes a while to get used to. My partner is used to driving either our Model 3 or our Model X with their quiet and effortless acceleration. Whenever we're in the GX and I'm trying simply accelerate to highway speeds it's always met with complaints of "are we in a rush?" and "don't kill us!" just because it's such a...loud affair in comparison. Usually my response is something along the lines of "we're only going 65...."
This is real! When walking around in my hilly neighborhood my wife is always on edge when she hears an ICE on high revs. She associates engine noise to speed (and by extension, danger) even if the vehicle in question is going 20mph making it's way up a steep slope.

How is there conflicting info? All LEs have Adventure package, which includes power tonneau. Seems simple.

On my test drive last Sunday, the powered tonneau was working totally fine. Opened and closed multiple times without issue

Chat with CS today said problem with tonneau covers was only in pre-production vehicles, and production vehicles are rolling off the line with powered tonneau covers, and if any issues arise, they will fix. Not holding up production.

He didn't specifically say if materials had been resourced and the cover reingineered. I asked, but he didn't answer that question specifically.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for crushing the dream of getting my R1S early ;)

Those small details would really annoy me. I'll be fine with a spring delivery. I don't need an 80k vehicle that has issues like that. Fix them please.
I agree.? ...... But, in the back of my mind, I wonder why they haven't already discovered these minor problems in over 3 years of testing. Spring delivery would work for me too......except, what if they get ready for production again and find another set of problems. When does this end? For me, it ends with whichever truck is available to me first, between the Ford and Rivian. I want the Rivian, but I'm out of time. Hopefully the Rivian will be offered to me first, but three plus years is a long enough wait for me.

The info @BoltEVowner reported in this post conflicts with the observations that I had reported in this post.
I don’t see the contradiction. The tonneau was locked out…. Doesn’t mean it’s a defective design. Perhaps all the test drive vehicles were on the same software release and in that release the function is disabled?

Not saying there isn’t an issue…. But I don’t think we can say there is, either.

I doubt there will be much more issues. All these seem rather small I guess? 3 more weeks I'll be at 3 years. I didn't put down a reservation with Ford, so I'm going to have to wait for Rivian. They really don't want to sell me a gimpy vehicle. I don't let things like that go, especially if I paid $80k! Service will have to open up a station on my driveway because I will always be calling them.

I think this is part of it. We had almost an hour yesterday with a new (400mi) production LE that they brought to our house. Within the first 5 minutes I ask "is this how to operate the tonneau" and the demo person said "that's been locked out". Drop the tailgate and I'm staring at rusting bolts and he said "yes - we've seen that - it looks like water is collecting". And then there was the funkiness of you can't latch the spare tire cover in one motion - you have to latch both corners. And then the hood button didn't release until he did a multi-step lock/unlock with the fob. And the courtesy light in the rear that stayed on...turned it off and it's back on...and the rear control panel that went unresponsive with the seat heater on high and he said "I'm going to have to reboot the car" (we know what that means).

We still love the vehicle but...boy I want them to work this stuff out before delivering mine. :)

PS: The demo person reported that - yes - there had been actual deliveries to non-employees in the PNW (he's based in Oregon). He seemed to have a pretty good idea of which trucks were where...whether they were pre-production or production...and who had taken delivery.
Wow, actual non-employee deliveries? Maybe they were former employees, technically thats a non-employee :p

Seems like you got a bit of a "lemon" during your test drive. The most concerning this is the rusted bolts. "yes - we've seen that - it looks like water is collecting". First, its more than one vehicle which means it might be a design flaw and/or wrong material choice. Second, did he mention its being addressed and if so how? Very concerning for us folks here in the PNW.

BTW, where was the rusted bolts exactly?

If the tonneau cover is an issue (or tailgate/bed issues) - they should just ramp up on the R1S production in the meantime. That makes the most sense. And I swear I'm not saying that because I have an R1S LE order......... I swear ;)

As others have noted, range anxiety is greatest early on due to the unknown. For example, when I go to the mountains or my son's place, I look at the gas gauge and immediately know if I will need to stop for gas or not.

A few months ago, we took my wife's e-tron to our son's house. It had about 80 miles of range left and I was sweating bullets the whole time, watching the range click down. All the while, my wife was mocking me for my concern. DIfference being that she drives the car all the time and knows how much range is needed to get there and back, just like I know how far I get on a quarter tank of gas.

And that was another interesting thing...there was no drama for acceleration. In comparison, when I accelerate on an onramp in my Boxster (a MUCH slower car) my wife immediately says something like "don't kill us"...and we're just getting up to the speed limit. Around 90 mph in the Rivian and not a peep. :)

Another random thought...her first comment after the car left was "nobody noticed the car". While I was driving all over Mercer Island (where at any given stop you're likely to see 2 or 3 Teslas and a Porsche etc) she was watching everyone to gauge their reactions. One man who was walking his dog turned and stared - and that was the only reaction she noticed. I'm more than fine with that...but for her...I can have the Rivian but she wants something more distinctive. We might be able to solve that with Yellow or Red <fingers crossed>.
If you want a EV that stands out and get lots of looks, then get her an e-Tron GT. My wife absolutely loves hers.

Agree completely. Some might even be OTA software updates.

We had another issue - the car was apparently set to normal height, my wife and I both remarked (after) how awkward it was to get into / out of compared to our GX470. That has a running board, well positioned handholds, and wider doors. The rear entrance was particularly noticeable in comparison. The CS rep mentioned that he could have lowered the car...my (5'3") wife thought that would have helped...but we did not try playing with the height. I think we're going to need that "kneel mode" for her - the 6yo and 9yo grandsons can certainly scramble now but would have been challenged when younger.
My Grand Cherokee has an air suspension system similar to Rivian. I can set it to automatically kneel when in park. I can't imagine Rivian wouldn't offer something similar.
