It's called Regenerative Braking Assist, but it isn't really blended braking, and it's on by default.So I don’t know if anyone has found the option or not on the R2 to turn blended braking on or off? I looked all over and can’t seem to find the option like on the R1.
Am I missing something?
I know I am not asking the merits of it. I have 2 R1s I did not see anywhere in my R2 to turn the function on or off. In the vehicle section under setting no button exists in the R2. Did not know if this was mentioned or not.Not to rehash the thread that Chis referenced, but if you turn off brake assist, you won't notice any difference except for when the battery condition does not allow as much regen.
When at 100% SoC, the HVB can't take more charge so "brake assist" uses the brakes to simulate what it would feel like if regen charging was possible. I have mine turned off and it is a bit of a shock when regen is suddenly not there when you expect it to be.
I am used to regen slowing the truck when backing out of the garage, but if it is fully charged, it just coasts instead of slowing when I take my foot off the brake. If you are on human autopilot, that could end in a bad result. Luckily not for me yet.

At the Park City, UT media event, one of the engineers (I can't recall which interview it was) talked about how R2 is completely brake-by-wire and uses blended braking (his term) to mix in friction brakes seamlessly so the driver doesn't notice.That is not blended braking. Blended braking is when you press the brake pedal and instead of applying the brakes, the motors are used to slow the vehicle. If you press the brake pedal hard enough, it blends in the friction brakes. It is needed if you have a 2 pedal drive mode, which Rivian does not have. When you press the brake pedal, only the friction brakes are engaged.
At least nobody has confirmed the R2 has it. If the R2 has a 2PD drive mode, then it probably does have blended braking. If it does not, then it is just like the R1.
@OutofSpecKyle also mentioned in one of his videos that the R2 has blended braking. But there is no purpose for blended brakes if there isn't a 2PD drive mode. If it is a R2 feature, then why? So it's not a 2PD mode, but the braking response should be smooth through the entire 1PD regen regime and when depressing the brake pedal. If they got it right, I'm not sure why you'd want to toggle that off...

Personally, I want the deceleration of my car to feel the same regardless of any motor/battery/temperature/etc condition. If I am trying to roll to a stop at an intersection, I don't want to have to think about whether regen is at full capability and either have to manually switch out of 1PD mentality to press the brake or end up rolling into the intersection. I want the super computer on wheels to figure that out for me and apply whatever method of deceleration brings the car to a safe stop in the expected distance.
Obviously, if implemented poorly and I can tell when the friction brakes kick in I could see that being annoying. But based on the boasting by Rivian engineers about the new brake-by-wire system, I doubt that will be an issue.
