My bad. I wasn't aware until now that I had to click the spare tire button. Having bought MANY high end vehicles during my lifetime, I have NEVER had to order a spare tire separately.
My xc60 t8 didn't come with one either. It's more common than you'd think.

So you apparently have not bought any of the high end vehicles that do not even offer one, nor even have a way to carry one...

Most states, and in fact the US federal government, actually require that new vehicles include a solution for addressing a flat tire. As we're seeing more and more, many automakers have opted for roadside assistance as their solution rather than giving us an adequate spare tire. The reasoning why is that the vast majority of consumers have reported via market research and in real-world practice that they're going to call roadside assistance anyway to change that tire for them. Sad, but true.

I think Rivian should include the full size spare by default in the configurator and let people remove it if they really don't want it. It's a lifestyle/adventure truck, why would you not want the spare? It's not like it's a Hummer EV where they didn't even bother to figure out how to include a spare with the truck... Their official spare tire option is a "Baja" style bed rack that can hold two spares so you wast 75% of your usable bed space. The Hummer EV SUV still keeps the spare mounted on the rear.

Ford Lightning includes the same under-mounted spare that all F-150s have. I'm interested to see if the Silverado EV will have a way to carry a spare. It's built on that same massive Ultium pack that the Hummer EV uses. Not sure where they'll put it, but may be able to under-mount similar to the Lightning since the truck has a longer wheelbase and bed than the Hummer.

I received my RIT (adventure package, off road upgrade) 4 days ago. Driven it about 600 miles and everything thus far has more than met my expectations. What is annoying is that it didn't come with a spare tire (I was told by my Rivian delivery guy that I hadn't ordered one). I would think that having paid almost $90,000 for a truck would have a spare included. So far, no response from my Rivian guide about this. Anyone else with this issue?
It was an option, you had to pay extra for it. I think it was between $600-$800 depending on the wheel's you chose. Bargain price for a matching factory wheel and tire (not a doughnut or steel spare)

I get optioning it out, but what I don't get is how they plan for the R1S to be a serious off-road hauler or overlander without a spare. It seems incredibly odd to make an off-road specific vehicle and not even provide an option for a spare.

So when building your configuration you never considered adding a spare? Also, without having a Max Pack how is it a $90k truck? I guess since I’ve been waiting since 2018 and looked at the configurator a thousand times now, I’m questioning how anyone could have missed the spare tire on the first page, right after making your tire selection.

Complaining that your truck didn't come with the spare is like complaining it didn't come with a wall charger. It is an option, has been all along and they are very clear on that. It isn't about what you expect or think they should of done, they were super obvious here 'pay for the spare if you want one'.

Sorry but at this point everyone should be crystal clear on what is included and what isn't.

R1S has an optional collapsible spare as used by various European marques.

A bargain when you consider the factory spare also includes a TPMS sensor ($50-$100 value)... and the assembly is high speed balanced as well.
Even if I was not able or willing to change the tire myself in case of a flat or blowout, I would 100% still order it so someone else could change it for me. Roadside assistance is nice to have, but there are still areas with no cell service, at least with an onboard spare you could always flag someone down to assist if you're not capable of changing the tire yourself.

As others have said, this is highly variable, even from the same manufacturer. My Velar did not come with a full size spare. My Defender did. At least both had some sort of spare, but it's not exactly like everything under the sun comes with one.

Rivian clearly indicates that it's an option. It's on you if you didn't notice it or chose not to purchase it. I've got no problem with a manufacturer making anything they want an option, so long as they clearly communicate it. That leaves the choice in my hands, and in general is a more buyer-friendly approach. They could have made it standard and just bumped the price by 1000$, and then people that don't want it get screwed.

That's all well and good for the highway, but the context is being off-road, no? You're going to need to be able to negotiate your way out. Is the collapsible spare going to do you good there?

It'll be better than nothing, but probably insufficient to get you out of any place difficult enough to shred the original tire. I think the aftermarket will look to solve this with hitch-mounted or rack-mounted spare tire carriers. Rivian themselves may put a product out if enough people request it, so I would suggest providing CS feedback indicating that a full-size spare needs to be an option for adventuring in the R1S.

My kids are teens now so I'm probably going to wind up with the R1T so it's a non-issue for me. I think it's pretty stupid to build a long range off-roader without a spare. They know that already at this point and don't need my additional non-R1S buying whiny ass telling them :CWL:

It’ll get you out of a jam. Maybe not out of a bunch of scree or shale which just cut up a tire or something, but if one is going to such places, I’d presume them to have also brought a full size spare.

You can’t honestly say the R1S is not available with a spare tire.

Eh, I'm honestly saying the R1S doesn't come with a spare. Not in the context an R1S should have a spare. This is a huge miss from Rivian imho.

Even if they just created an OEM tail spare accessory, but nothing is a miss. Especially while we apparently can't even order a spare from them.
