OC third row floor mat a different color than first & second rows?

We took delivery of our R1S with OC interior three weeks ago and noticed that while the first and second row floor mats are the ocean coast color, the third row is black. I created a service ticket and the when I took it in, the person at the SC said that all R1S have a black third row floor mat. Sounds really odd to me.

Can folks with a non-BM interior R1S please confirm what color their third row floor mat is?

Thanks for checking. It's not a big deal at all, but I can't help but wonder what the conversation in the meeting room was like when this decision was made...

"We're going with a black mat in the third row regardless of what's in the first two"
...
"What?! That makes no sense. All the mats should match!"
...
"Don't be an idiot. No one ever looks in the third row, and we'll save a few pennies by ordering them in bulk and throwing them into all R1Ss"

The original prototypes also had chilewich mats in the front and rear trunks that matched the first/ second row mats. Personally, I miss those more than a more attractive third row mat.

It’s not just that the color doesn’t match, the material is different, too. My first 2 rows are Chilewich and color-keyed to OC while my 3rd row is carpet and black. Using the same carpet material probably does save money to make it worthwhile to Rivian and it’s in a location where the owner is least likely to be bothered by it. Mostly.

Agreed - it's an entirely different material. I still can't understand the decision - would've though that the cost difference isn't too material, but perhaps I'm wrong!

Rivian seems to spend too much on some things and too little on others. It can be subjective and we all may not agree on what falls into the too much versus too little categories.

I’ve seen many cases where manufacturers skimp the further you get from the driver’s seat. Our Land Rover had vinyl or cheap vinyl-feeling leather on the 3rd row seats, most manufacturers don’t give you heated 3rd row seats or ventilated 2nd row seats, and our ID.4 doesn’t even have accent lighting in the 2nd row.

The best price I can find online for the Chilewich material used for the mats is over $120 a yard - which is 5x-10x more expensive than regular auto carpet. The cost savings on the floor mat is way more than they saved by getting rid of the 12v power socket.

I do not care for the chilwich mats at all. I think they are flimsy and cheap. I took delivery yesterday and immediately put the all-weather rubber mats in. I'd much rather have had all carpets the same black loop style my black interior has on the floor. I believe our Range Rover SC had a similar interior floor carpeting years ago. Is it possible the 3rd row mats are made from material cut outs where seats are and its en efficiency in usage?

I’d love to get a matching 3rd row Chilewhich mat. Definitely seems like a cost cutting decision.
