Options help on resale to private parties and can make for a quicker and easier sale.

The don’t really add any $ value and absolutely nothing on a trade in or sale to a dealer.

Manheim, which is a huge auction house, doesn’t consider options at all on any car when using their valuation tool - which is what the dealership uses when trading in a car.

That said, I’m still getting it!

You have to remember that it's "added" underbody protection. There is already underbody protection that has to be pretty decent for the batteries not to get punctured in normal road driving should you run over some sort of debris. Unless you are doing some serious off roading, I don't think they are mandatory. I also like the tow hook look but to pay $2k for tow hooks is insane. I'm sure there will be aftermarket tow hooks and skid plates made shortly after more trucks are in public hands.

This is an option that bothers me and really needs more explanation by Rivian. I’ve spoken with multiple CS that have told me that the following text on the website describes the underbody of the platform WITHOUT the Off Road upgrade…
______________
Reinforced underbody shield
Protecting the underbody of our vehicle is a layered shield of high-strength steel, alloyed aluminum and carbon fiber composite. Engineered to absorb, deflect and distribute force from impacts, the shield is designed for maximum protection in the most extreme off-road conditions.
______________

Each CS I’ve brought this up with says the Off Road upgrade offers more edge to edge protection and the tow hooks. However, based on the above describing the truck without the upgrade I am not inclined to get the upgrade. I have a GX470 that I take into the wilderness and throughout Death Valley and while I have OME suspension and BFG ATKO2s, I do not have any further armor than what came from the manufacturer. I’ve been on some hairy (for me) trails like Lippencott Mine into Saline Valley with my truck and have never slammed into a rock on the underbody that wasn’t just a small rock being thrown up along the way.

I dont mean to argue the value of it, but if all models come with an underbody that “…is designed for maximum protection in the most extreme off-road conditions” why upgrade? Anyone else have any better thoughts on this... Arguably its wise to get the most protection you can — just not sure what the extra protection really is

If you do some internet searches for underbody pics there are some out there. The entire underbody is covered so any type of extra off road skid plate or beefier underbody will only add weight and do nothing to improve mileage due to aero or anything like that IMO. I have done some serious offroading and if you are rock crawling or going over super big obstacles, maybe you need the additional protection but for fire roads, double track, etc. , standard mild off road stuff I don't see any need for anything else. Fully agree with Bullitt that they should provide more details of what exactly the skid plates entail.

I don't think we've seen any R1Ts without the off-road package.

Underbody?

As an aside, I don't understand why LE buyers would forgo their free wheel upgrade. I actually really like the 21s and think they look great here, but it feels like throwing away $1,800.

I’m an LE holder and won’t be off reading. Pretty set on the 20 ATs because I like the elevated stance, but agree they look good here. I would prefer the range to be honest, still not sure. I keep changing my mind about color, model, wheels, interior. Ha.

Same, going with the 20s despite not being much of an off-roader, purely because the upgrade is free, they're forged, and there seems to be more tire choices. I originally specced the 22s, but my wife (who will likely drive the truck from time to time) has curbed the shit out of her current 22s so many times I'm completely turned off from them.

Here's a picture of one with the off-road package showing it from the rear underneath. It looks similar in the front. I think it will provide better aerodynamics as well as more protection off road. I've not seen any pictures without the off-road package, but you can see the bolts holding the shield in place, so I assume that would not be there without the off-road package.
