So replacing all the seats pushes Rivian into bankruptcy. That would be nice. Is it really necessary? What should the cutoff be anyway? I've never heard my grocery bags complain.

Hey Rivian, this one's free:

If the door hasn't opened since the weight sensor last triggered, there's still a passenger.

Why would they need to replace the whole seat? Everything is controlled by software now, add some logic there. Has every other company figured out the secret and Rivian can’t? I’d rather they go out of business or lose 10 billion than something happen to my wife or son, because they didn’t fix this!!

One of the mobile techs, told me that there is a customer who has had the seat replaced twice (2x) and still has the same issue.

I believe it is where Rivian decided to place the sensor AND it should be able to be fixed via OTA sw update With the logic of if there is a weight and seat belt is on, there is a passenger.

The tech was quick to point out that there are car seats and having airbag trigger can be more dangerous. My response was who puts a kid that is in a car seat in the front passenger seat? R1 is not a two-seater vehicle.

There was a recall on this problem for 2022 R1T built last year. Nothing on R1S.

Fisker is having a similar issue with their Ocean, but it's the driver's seat, which is preventing the car from going into gear.

The 2 mobile services I’ve had for this problem, both times Rivian tech set bunch of weight plates on the seat until the seat sensor triggered that there is someone there. It happens to be the similar weight as my wife - around 100 lbs.

The problem comes in two distinct issues:
1 - won‘t acknowledge that there is a passenger sitting there with seatbelt on
2 - When finally recognizes that there is someone there, then it goes off while driving and it may or may not come back on

In both cases, if the vehicle does not recognize that there is someone sitting, none of the temperature controls for the passenger side of the vehicle function. The entire side.

Rivian needs to figure out that a passenger does not all of suddenly disappear in the middle of a drive with seatbelt fastened at all Times.

It is ridiculous that they continue to ignore the problem.
Of course the airbag doesn't need to deploy when a bunch of weighted plates are placed on the seat. It needs to deploy when a human being over the age of 13 sits in the seat according to nhtsa. If that means the person weighs 100lb 120 or 150lb I don't know, but I'm 5'10" and don't weigh 150. Moreover not all my weight is supported on a seat. The ground supports my legs and a sill might support my arm(s). Nhtsa has exceptions for high risk individuals that should be exempted from airbag deployment scenarios. However, those individuals should not be exempted from use of the climate controls. I believe that airbag exemption would include persons with a physiology similar to someone under 13 years of age but you can read more here.

Each vehicle undergoes crash testing to determine when and how safety equipment should be deployed based on the structure and performance of the vehicle.

This is definitely a safety hazard. As far as I know, the majority of R1S/R1T don’t have this issue. So it must be a faulty sensor or an issue with its installation for those of us with this problem. I don’t think Rivian is going to fix it willingly. I just filed a complaint with the NHTSA. Please do so if you experience this problem. Link is https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index

I visited the service center today (Sacramento, CA) for the same issue. The employees there were awesome and took my concern seriously. My wife weighs about 120 and it wasn’t triggering. The tech had seen this before and said a piece of trim under the seat might not be installed correctly and may be pushing up against the sensor wire. Sure enough, the tech fixed the piece of trim and now it works perfectly. Keep in mind that the sensor is at the back of the cushion and it will not trigger if your butt is not pushed all the way back (even for me). Here is the note from my service center visit:

Generally the airbag functions as intended. However, if my wife leans bag in the passenger seat the airbag will disengage and turn "off." Basically the seat no longer recognizes that she is in the seat. Doesn't even lean that far back. Anyone else? Doesn't seem right to me.
I started a thread about this too. It appears to be caused by a seat sensor that is either not positioned properly or not sensitive enough. It requires direct weight of 110 pounds directly on the sensor area to recognize that there is a passenger in that front seat.
I suspect there’s a design flaw there.

I’ve had this issue since I bought the truck last year. Brought it in twice and was told no issue. Filed a claim with recall authorities.

What in the world are you talking about. Clearly, you didn't read the post properly and just assumed that I thought the airbag would should deploy with weights sitting on it... SMH
