Sorry Folks, nothing to see here. I must have missed the option when I was trying to build on the configurator. VandalSibs showed me the way :) Sorry!

I couldn't find a PDM with the options I wanted in the shop so My guide told me to just take a DM Max because there was for sure going to be a software update offered (for $$$) in the near future. Do you think this is the reason why you can't build a PDM in the configurator?
Second question is If you do buy a PDM upgrade in the future, do you need to inform your insurance too? Thoughts? Thanks!

My bet is that it becomes available on October 1st!

Rivian can then enjoy a Q4 revenue bump as we all order the upgrade. (Perhaps it will be available for order then too.)

One note of caution: is performance available with the smaller battery packs? I’m not sure if all will be able to upgrade. Anyone know?

Looks like it's only not an option on the dual standard, as I can select the performance upgrade for Large and Max packs when building an R1T or R1S. It's a little drop down when you are choosing between the battery pack sizes after first starting the build process.

My guide had told me it would only be for the Max and the large (if it happens to be one of the locked max packs, maybe the all are?

From what I was told and read online, the performance upgrade's extra power is only felt in sport mode and not all-purpose. Does anyone else have the performance upgrade and feel different?

Hmm. I have a R1T PDM and when I step on it it scoots right along. I don't THINK I need to be in sports mode. Although if I am demoing the zip I usually do switch to sport mode. TBH I rarely do any of this. I appreciate the sand mode of the Performance. This I do use.

The added power is only in Sport Mode on mine.

@HaveBlue is correct, the extra power is only in sport mode, and you can't leave the truck in sport mode. It will reset back to all purpose after sitting for 4 hours. Highly recommend against getting the performance upgrade unless they address this.

. . . Second question is If you do buy a PDM upgrade in the future, do you need to inform your insurance too? Thoughts? Thanks!
My insurance company did not ask for that kind of detail, but I think that it would be visible to them through your VIN.

While it's true that the PDM needs to be in Sport mode to access its greater HP, I reasonably sure that this is a change introduced by one of two recent SW updates. It's not clear to me why Rivian would want to make that change, but if my recollection that it was via OTA update is correct, it could easily be reveresed.

On a related issue, my PDM truck often reverts back to All-Purpose while parked, but not always, at least in my case. Of course, my truck has a few other idiosyncracies, such as a pretty widely variable level of vampire drain, so my case may be unique.

I don't believe that's the case if the performance upgrade is added after the fact. Similarly, ludicrous mode was a $5k upgrade for a Tesla Model S P85D back in 2015/2016. I bought one used with the upgrade already intact. Tesla actually took that away post-purchase because it was not part of the original MVPA, and there was no other mention of the ludicrous mode attached to the VIN. Fortunately I was able to fight to get it added back as I had correspondence with the sales advisor that the car had ludicrous mode before I bought it. The point is that I don't think any post-purchase upgrades become tied to the VIN in any external system of record, even if those upgrades come from the manufacturer.

But I'd want it added to my insurance since it would change the value of the vehicle, and it may affect payout negatively if it's totaled.

I am a new owner since late June, but I think AP has always had reduced power compared to sport. Maybe Rivian did this to save on code. Since the base trucks do not have sport mode, all their power is available in all purpose, and they only add the code for sport mode to performance trucks to unlock the available power.

The truck resets to defaults (all purpose, auto suspension) after 4 hours or after an infotainment reboot, so you can run errands in sport mode without having to fiddle with the settings - as long as you never spend more than 4 hours away from the truck.
