I here you about driving time to the service center. We are 2 and half hours away and live in the middle of nowhere in MN. In two and a half years of ownership I have had very few issues so it has not been too bad being that far away. The 12 volt replacement hurt for cost. I was out of warranty and had to pay for it. The next battery better last longer. I will say the service center is good about getting us in and finishing within the day so we do not have to stay over or make another trip.

Yea, I understand the concerns. I’m lucky to be 10 minutes from a service center.

The service center footprint presumably will expand with the R2 launch. That will make all trims more accessible in more cities. Also, outside service companies (Safelight, Discount Tire) are getting more capabilities over time.

It’s not a solution for today, but I’m confident it will get better over time.

I’ve personally come to the conclusion that most “luxury” features aren’t worth it over the long term. Every extra sensor, motorized latch, or electronic component is one more piece that is a potential failure point over the life of the vehicle.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’d rather have the equivalent of an EV Tacoma (albeit with Rivian/Tesla quality software) than the luxury package Rivian has put together.

It’s still a few years until something like that will be available. I’ll love and use my Rivian in the meantime. Maybe even Rivian will come out with a simplified R1T that will fit this criteria.

I Love my R1T but when the quad comes out I’ve got a deposit on one. Wouldn’t want to even ponder these things out of warranty. I leased one car one time and I just can’t deal with it mentally. Drove me bonkers.

We're about 2.5 hours from Portland Service Center. They and (855) RIVIAN-5 have treated us very well. Happy campers with more than 38,000 miles on our R1S and R1T combined.

From what I read on the forums, Rivian's Portland and Tualatin (OR) Service Centers are two of the best managed and best performing in the whole system.

Sorry you weren't confident, @JackRussellRacing. You did what you needed to do for your own peace of mind.

Best to all!

There are 2 in NC with a third on the map to open soon, so just curious how far you are from those compared to VA.
I am in Winston-Salem. Going to Richmond VA (when the comms module failed) required a nearly 4-hour drive each way. Going to anything in the Charlotte or Raleigh area would be ~2 hours each way. The 'third party' option in Hickory NC is still 1 hour away.

Just going to casually drop in a photo of my amazing garage and Ford GT .... nice. Clearly I'm not green with envy. Sweet.

In the words of Pop heronie, Anne Marie, "Ciao, Adios"

Sold my 22 R1T this morning. 21k miles. I absolutely loved the truck and everything about the Rivian vibe, but lived in fear of any service/warranty related issues with backed up SC and hellish commute even to reach the nearest one. Not as much depreciation on the truck as I expected; I guess it tracks with just about every other EV and/or 'luxury' vehicle.

Staying EV, for sure. I'll ride my Zero for a few months while I plot the next move.

There is a risk assessment for anyone buying the 1st generation vehicle and particularly from a brand new company (which Rivian was at the time). This should include distance/convenience related to service center locations….

Gotta echo the other commenters and give you props on that garage. That is beautiful, well done, man.

Thanks everyone. Yes real garage. House is on the market as of today. Too big for us so we’re building a one story retirement home a few blocks away. Will be a 5k home with 3k in garage space. Building a wash bay between the garages. One will be for the fancier cars the other for the trucks. Here’s a pic of one of them we just got to test the lights in

Service IS the achilles heel of Rivian. I just keep hoping it gets better with more service centers. I think they had no choice…..should they have built many service centers before they manufactured vehicles?? I dont think so.

Ultimately, Rivian’s ability to service vehicles in a timely manner will make or break the company. You can’t live on early adopters forever.

And yes, I’ve had significant warranty work on Audi, Porsche, Range Rover and BMW vehicles. The big difference is they get the car in quickly and all give me a loaner.

The San Jose Svc ctr is booked so far out and it takes so long to actually work on the vehicle. Had good success with mobile Svc 2x, but the Last mobile apt I’d scheduled they cancelled the day before (after waiting 6 weeks) - then tried to re-book for 6 weeks later.

Would never own off warranty -

I’m kind of having this same debate right now as well. I’m at 72k miles and have had many issues requiring service, and my truck is in the shop for a HV battery replacement right now. Service center 2 hours away, but no wait times and they are very helpful and responsive. Love the truck and the company but my family thinks I’m nuts to have stuck with it this long.

My service center is fairly close to me and for serious issues they tend to get to things quickly.

I say that as someone who thinks Rivian service is horrible.

I'm going to keep my 2022 R1T out of warranty. I do recognize that it could be expensive to fix so that's why I plan on getting an extended warranty once I'm closer to the cutoff age/mileage.

I do plan on getting a second vehicle once I convince myself to sell my Sprinter Camper Van. That one is a maintenance nightmare. It's basically a money tree for MB Dealers.

That doesn't even include all the Camper stuff. I'm holding off on selling mostly due to emotional attachment and its so nice.

I have been thinking about getting a Buzz ID.

If it just had a bit more range and if the SW was at least at the Rivian level.
I'm already out of warranty, are extended warranty's available in this case?
