R1S shifts to park when backing trailer

Does anyone know why the R1 would make an alert sound, auto brake and then shift to park when backing a trailer?

I was moving an empty boat trailer around my property on level ground. Many times when I went into reverse, I got an audible alert. The brakes were auto applied and my 2025 R1S shifted into park. I had to shift back into reverse more than a dozen times. The problem was intermittent. Sometimes I could back up fine. The trailer electric was plugged in and appeared to be working fine.

Any idea what’s causing this?

If your butt comes off the seat, it'll brake and shift into park. I haven't found any workaround for this other than to try to keep pressure on the seat while looking backwards or relying more on the high backup can that the truck has.

Are you lifting your ass off the seat to look behind you? That has been a common problem with people backing up around here. Use your mirrors instead.

If your seatbelt is buckled, this shouldn’t happen even if you lift off the seat.

(I hate this feature. Also, it’s not related to towing AFAIK)

It's commonly referred to as the AIS safety feature. Asses In Seats.

If you absolutely must lift off the seat, just buckle the seatbelt behind you.

Ahh. Thanks all for the info. I didn’t have my seatbelt buckled since I was just moving around my property and I tend to lift up to get a look over my shoulder when backing a trailer.

Yeah, I even know about this one and it still catches me off guard sometimes when I’m backing my trailer up

As others have said, it’s when you lift your butt off the seat. What I do is to crank my seat up as high as possible before my head hits the roof and my knees get stuck under the wheel. That seems to do the trick while you’re backing up, and then you can just hit “Restore” (seat position) when you’re done with the maneuver.

I always buckle the seatbelt behind me so I can backup a trailer like I always have. They need a way to bypass this stupid feature!
