Original configuration: R1S/RB/OC/20”/Adventure/Quad/Large pack

Two weeks ago I got access to the R1S shop and found I configuration that I’m happy with. R1S/FG/OC/22”/Adventure/Quad/Large Pack/underbody shield

what I found odd is that this VIN 116XX has the underbody shield. I reached out to my guide and asked about when this R1S was built and if there was a reason (i.e rejection) for it to be in the R1S shop? My guide also said that the vehicle was still at the factory and that it would have to be shipped to San Diego.

I did a quick search on VIN S/N and found the latest VIN at the time were in the 123XX vs. 116XX. Not sure at what daily rate Rivian is currently producing an R1S but 700 units is not a trivial number.

I also found odd that my guide said Rivian is building in batches, however the underbody shield is not standard.

Should I be worried or paying attention to “something” during delivery? Or maybe I was just lucky

Guide response to my inquiry:
“All vehicles on the R1 Shop are new and are not reject or models with issues. Those vehicles are placed in the shop since we build in batches.”

Used to be able to order any of them with the underbody shield. My '22 R1T has 22" wheels and the shield. We could have configured our R1S that way as well but I decided we likely wouldn't end up taking it off-road, so saved the money.
My intention was to eventually get a set of 20" bead lock wheels for off-roading, but haven't stepped up to make that investment yet.

It's probably just sat at the factory because whoever had reserved it decided to cancel right away when their 8 steps came up. Rivian is making a few thousand vehicles a month at this point.

I would have like to save the underbody shield money but since we have a pre-order price and signed the purchase agreement I’m hoping to get the $7,500 tax credit plus our Range Rover was totaled due to an electric fire and didn’t want to keep a rental for too long. At least that os the justification I gave to myself to pull the trigger on this R1S.

Tesla produces vehicles in batches. My guess is they make a set number during a production run. If the order volume is less than that number or if a customer changes/cancels then they have a couple of extra vehicles.

I wouldn't worry about it being a reject (we aren't). If there are issues you can reject it. Also, if you take delivery you have 7 days or 1,000 miles (whichever comes first) to return it if your not happy with it.

I wouldn’t be worried one bit. I had to reject my first one (super early vin 003xx) when all the others were in the 8-10k VIN range when it arrived. It had so many cosmetic issues I rejected it. The replacement one I grabbed from the shop last week is a 79xx range when I’m now hearing they are in the 13k VIN range. This one has trunk/ body panel alignment issues but I’m sure the SC will take care of them.

Vehicles can remain at the factory for many different reasons. For example.. didn't pass the initial inspection. Not a big deal.. just means they caught something you likely would have caught at delivery, and they took the time to go fix it at the factory.

In Q1 they produced an average of about 783 R1s (combined R1T and R1S) per week. We know they're now producing way more R1Ss than R1Ts -- some have indicated it's 2:1 R1S:R1T. Assuming they've ramped things up, 700 R1S is probably <2 weeks production and maybe even 1 week or less.

Is a maximum of 2 week difference in production worth any stress at all? I would say most definitely not.

FWIW, I have an 115XX VIN that is my desired build and it has the underbody shield. I was given an august/September delivery in April and out of the blue it was ready in early June. Picking up July 1 for state EV credit purposes.

Rivian has committed to building 50,000 units in 2023 which calculates out to an average of 4166 vehicles per month. Of course, that includes the R1T, R1S, and the Amazon delivery vehicle.
