Well WOOT, my r1t is arriving tomorrow. It's been a LOOONG wait. Lets just hope the wife likes it :)

So it's scheduled tomorrow ... and today, i get an email that Rivian has sent me documents to online Notarize.com, mentioning License Plates (OK) and Registration (err ... i was NOT expecting this).

We haven't decided yet if we're going to register it in the business name, my wife's name (she has her own insurance, and it's a lot cheaper than mine), or, if the wife isn't thrilled with it, just sell it. As such, i don't believe i'm ready to register it. it will be on private property in the meantime.

It's been a while since i've bought a car, but it's either been new (in-state dealer, for which Rivian is not in Idaho), or cash to a private party, which just signs the clear title to me on the spot. Do i understand correctly that:
  1. plates are mandatory - but what "is" the temporary plate a new car comes with?
    1. Can't this work with Rivian the same as if i buy a new car out of state, and drive it home to register in-state. I do *not* pay registration fees in the state of purchase, only in my residence state (obviously sales tax is paid at time of purchase - as i've already paid with the rivian order)
  2. "registration" is where i pay the tax to the state, and is obviously mandatory to have it on public roads at all - but not mandatory to *own* it, correct? I should be able to walk over to the DMV to do registration on my own.
Help! thank you

As a WA resident, the process felt a little odd to us. You have to remember, this is a mail-order purchase that's legally taking place in IL. So they're following certain Illinois-isms, including putting their own IL plates on the trade-in vehicles and issuing you a temporary 90-day registration permit from IL (which requires you to provide proof of insurance with VIN in advance). We also did a WA application for title and notarized a power of attorney allowing Rivian to work with the WA DOL on our behalf to get our WA registration.

Since this is not being processed by a local dealer but instead is a consolidated, one-process-fits-all mail order thing, I suspect you will have a hard time getting them to provide any sort of exceptional treatment.

I can't shed any light on the registration process, but congrats on your new truck. She will love it!

what "is" the transaction that is happening - since rivian is as you say an Illinois dealer, is it this (?):
  1. rivian creates a registration in my name in Illinois, with the temporary (paper) "plate" that comes with this
  2. then, on my behalf, submits a title transfer to Idaho?
how long does it take for me to get the title in hand in this case?

My concern there would be, if they only did #1, i'd get the title on day 1 - but with #2, now it can take 3 (!) months to get the title.

I can't speak to Idaho-isms here, but there was no paper title to transfer. Our WA application was for the original title (which is something that can take about 6 weeks to process here for reasons I'll never understand) to be issued by WA state.
