Here's a photo of how I rigged it. Grabbed a large root on the backside of the stump.

Never use a tow ball to pull anything but a trailer. Chains have their own problems since there's so much mass/energy in-play.

In this case, using the ball to pull from proved fatal.

If you get through that job with your back glass intact and no decapitated bystanders it is a success!

Hey y'all! This seemed like the best place to post this. I needed to remove a tree stump from my back yard. Instead of renting a grinder, I decided to yank it with my R1T.

1st Attempt: Minimal digging and cutting of roots on the backside
2nd Attempt: Spent about 45 min digging and cutting roots. Seemed to do the trick
3rd Attempt: Finished her off

I'd say it was a success. Especially since I didn't lose my back window :CWL: I did put the truck in off road mode.
TRUCK YEAH!

Good advice.

I do think it'd be wise to point out this is an example of an extreme outcome of a slightly different situation (vehicle recovery vs. pulling a stump). There was no one behind me. And I took a pretty gingerly approach to my pulls. Regardless of setup, if you go HAM, expect some carnage.

That said, let me add a disclaimer. The intent of my post was to share my personal experience pulling a stump in my backyard with my R1T. This is not a "How to Pull a Stump" tutorial. I'm not advocating the rigging setup I used. Right or wrong, it's what I chose to do. Personally, I don't think what I did overstressed the ball on my hitch. Especially with the tire cushioning the chain, and in turn, the shock loading on the ball. But I guess I could just replace it for $20 and call it a day. If you're looking at how to pull a stump, please do your own research.

Ugh just watched this video. Tragic :(. I did see that the ball didn't shear. In this case, it was a (very large) drop hitch that failed, almost certainly due to the massive bending moment that was induced on it.

Again, anyone thinking about pulling a stump with a vehicle, please do your own research.

I just want to send a shout out to your young helper. I just loved his timely updates, recommendations, AND his enthusiastic support for dad. He was so happy FOR YOU when the stump moved! It was great that you were able to remove the stump, but more than anything else it was such a moving reminder of what really matters in life. Thanks for sharing!

I didn’t know people actually used chains to pull stuff, I thought that was in what not to do videos. I also didn’t know people also pulled with a ball mount or jerk a chain.

I’m not trying to be a jerk, cute video but I immediately cringed when I saw the possible safety issues, especially when pets and kids were not far away.
Glad the stump came out and nobody got hurt or damaged.

Well, as a professional engineer licensed in 8 states, and having spent the last 17 years in the field of structural forensics, I can say with 100% certainty ain't no issue with my balls ⚾

Attempt 4: come here son, now let's get that loose tooth pulled.

The tire is smart since chains impart a heavy shock load. You were pretty ginger with the ball so not much danger of breaking it. The receiver is class 4 so as tough as a 2" comes. The stinger and ball probably only class 3.

Great job! Side note, off topic, can you share a photo of you pelican box and mounting? I gave a pair but used a platform mounted to the crossbars then the box mounted to that. Overall a PITA when I have to remove the box and platform.
