I am a day one reservation holder with an invite range of August through September.

However, I’m concerned about keeping the car cool and airflow, especially in the cargo area. That’s usually where my dog goes. I was surprised to learn that there is no B pillar or rear air vent. It looks like the only rear air is on the backside of the center console.

Do any current R2 owners have any experience with this? It gets very hot in the summer here especially at the ball field.

My Tesla has no problem, staying ice, cold, and the new Model Y L has rear air vents. (And better speakers but we don’t have to go there. 😂)

Any thoughts from R2 owners? 🐕

There's always cracking open the rear hatch glass to promote airflow.

I can’t think of any vehicle that has third row or cargo area air vents that doesn’t have a third row. No direct airflow onto the dogs so it will be very similar to the Model Y or a RAV4 or CRV or 4Runner or any other 5 seat mid SUV.

How it’s different from the Model Y - the HVAC system is outstanding and I never have an issue keeping the whole car freezing if I need to. (And then as I mentioned the Y L does have rear air.)

I’m looking for someone to tell me the R2 is great in terms of rear airflow but honestly it probably makes sense to pass on delivery given my needs.

All of the reviews have praised how quiet R2’s HVAC system is…
That’s actually not true. Kyle in Out of Spec talked about how noisy it seemed in his Park City review. Gjeebs mentioned it too. And in any case, I noticed it in my demo drives. It was both noisy but someone not getting much colder. (But I’m hoping a current owner says this is somehow fixed with software now.)

I’ll attempt to clarify some of the comments around the HVAC.

The interior noise from air blowing from the vents is quite loud on higher fan speeds. The exterior noise from the system cooling the car is very quiet compared to gen 1 or gen 2 R1 vehicles.
After fast charging you can also hear some cooling noises in the dash area but really only without music playing.

Totally agree it’s quieter on the outside. I had a Gen 2 R1S and I always felt like the car was about to explode. R2 is quieter on the outside for sure.

The issue I noticed was on the inside (where I drive). It was really loud but also weirdly not very cold. Again, happy to hear if it’s been fixed.

Again I’m really interested to hear from actual R2 owners about the cargo area airflow. All of us can guess. Owners can speak authoritatively.

I have an R2 in my garage right now. There are no cargo area vents, so are you just curious if the rear area stays cool-ish under certain circumstances? I would be happy to test something for you I just don’t really know what exterior conditions would need to be.

Oh I don’t want to put you out! But yeah I’m curious if you’d put a dog back there, behind the seats, and feel like they’re getting enough air. I’m happy to buy a top glass shade to help, but without air getting back there I wouldn’t be stoked about using it for that purpose. (Wasn’t an issue in my R1 because there were vents given the third row.)

Congrats on your R2

I have an R2 on order and my plan was to put my dog in the back area. Your post got me thinking about the airflow back there (assuming that I don't roll down the back window).

I found that Luno sells a camping fan, that I think might work. It comes with a suction cup mount that I will place on the side window in the "trunk area." It does require a power bank since it doesn't come with any power connections. I have a spare power bank, that I could use to power it. Will have to buy a longer USB-C cable since I'll store the power bank in the cubby hole near the 110 outlets and the 12V plug

It's a bit expensive for a portable fan, but it can be used within a tent and other uses.

Hopefully, I'll get my R2 soon so that I can actually try this

Y L is a three-row vehicle. Compare to the regular Y. Or compare Y L to R1S (which *DOES* have C-pillar vents for the third row.)

Or stop being a Tesla shill in the Rivian forum.

I do not see it being an issue. The R2 is close to the size of my old Jeep GC and the second row vents are similar. I never had an issue taking our pups out to the desert in that vehicle.
