R2 "Self Driving" autonomous capabilities

The R1 was marketed for quite some time as having Level 3 capable autonomous driving capability. It clearly does not.

I wouldn't take any marketing hype as true before the R2 is actually delivered. It doesn't matter if it's the autonomous driving suite, range, horsepower, 0 to 60 times, etc. There is always a come down between what marketing says it can do, and what it can do in real life.

Agree - my biggest complaint is being unable to avoid lane-creepers next to me, especially semis, without disengaging the system. Feels way too dicey around traffic.

It’s great on open roads with limited traffic, though. New lane change feature is pretty cool too.

Rivian is way behind Tesla, GM as well as Ford when it comes to driver assist system. My wife loves her Tesla X mainly because it allows her to use it in local roads, and it is so much more advanced than earlier version as it stops at red light, gives out traffic control alerts, and sees the road much better than human eyes can at night. Then there is AI based FSD…
My son has Blue Cruise in his Ford. Again much better than Rivian as Rivian is still useless in many highways. You buy Rivian because of the hardwares, not because of its softwares at this time.

Was part of the advertising literature when we bought our R1s too, so we will see if it ever comes to light. I just want something along the lines of BlueCruise and SuperCruise. I don't need or want full self driving, just hands free on pre-mapped highways.

I interpret the announcement as telling current R1 owners we will not be getting these capabilities. RJ made a bid deal about the new cameras and processors and their ability to support Hands Free driving. Which says to me, current R1 owners don't have the hardware to support it. That is frustrating to me... and clearly not consistent with what was described as the roadmap.

I use D+ all the time, and as more and more cars come equipped with this capability it will become a must have in my opinion. I expect the entire auto industry to be turned upside down when Tesla goes full autonomous... and now I understand my brand new R1 won't likely even get to hands free.

Folks, our R1 also have 11 cameras and 5 radars. My impression from RJ was it is a higher-powered processor. Perhaps we will be offered an upgrade path down the road like Tesla did to replace the computer and gain functionality. That is my bet.

Can't do hands-free L2 without a driver monitor camera as far as I am aware. L3 could potentially be, but it also means Rivian taking liability for those situations.

Why should you expect it in the R1 as it only costs twice as a R2.

We're beta testers with the first R1 releases that were based on older hardware due to the pandemic pushing everything back. The refreshed R1 will probably be much better but I don't see Rivian allowing hardware upgrades at all for original buyers. I wish I could've leased it knowing the battery tech etc.. will be wildly better in 2-3 years. I'm thankful for the early pricing and IRA rebate otherwise it's just not worth the $90-100k they want now.
