Irrelevant since there isn't any available transfer switch hardware, let alone bidirectional charger that is approved yet. Same story as R1....
This isn't correct. There are PLENTY of solutions to use 220v AC to power a house. Your thinking about a bidirectional charger that would convert DC to AC for a house. IF you have a generator inlet on your house (or like me, a generator inlet that connects to my house battery as part of my solar panel system) you can input 220v 30 amp AC or higher into the inlet and use the power. Plenty of people do this right now with the Ford Lightning with Pro Power.

No V2H/V2G? Just a plug?
Not the same. V2H/V2G requires new hardware at the home. RJ has said all Rivians are capable of this.

I guess I take V2H to mean whole home and not a bypass panel. All the extra hardware makes things complicated to the Nth degree.

Yea, I can see that. The naming conventions aren't the best. V2L, you can just plug in anything like usual. V2H, well DC or AC? Generator inlet or bi-directional charger? 240v or 120v?

The adapter plug is targeted at V2L applications. It doesn't mean it couldn't do light V2H but a means of isolating the home from the grid is required as soon as any energy supply is plugged into the home to avoid back feeding the grid and potentially electrocuting line workers in a grid down scenario. Clearly this adapter doesn't have automatic support for grid isolation built in and using 2x 20 Amp outputs is far from optimal.

If people want to understand what V2H/V2G looks like for AC and DC then the attached documents on the relatively recently introduced Enphase Bidirectional charger and associated white paper provide details.

Many in California qualify for a free transfer switch from PG&E. I got one and currently use it to plug in my generator to power the house when the power goes out. My friend who has a Lightning just uses his Lightning to power his house during outages since it has a 9.6kW 220V outlet. Super simple. I'm looking for something like that on the R2.

The shown adapter appears to only do 120V 20A - 2400W. Almost certainly "single phase" 120V, just having two outlets for convenience, not two separate 20A opposed-phase outlets you could combine for 240V.

That said, Rivian has said in the past that R2 can do AC V2x out the charge port at up to 11kW, and R1 can do DC V2x out the charge port up to 22kW. Third party V2H/V2G solutions have already been demonstrated doing this on R1, available for purchase today.

The 2400W limitation is likely solely because they wanted to do "standard household outlets" on the simple adapter. Hopefully this means a Rivian V2H EVSE will be coming out soon(ish) after R2 release.

Seems like if all you need is home backup then R2 should be able to support that using a transfer switch like your friend, especially if the R2 supports 11kW 220/240V AC output, which seems to be what they indicated at an analyst day.

Since I'm retired, my requirement from R2 is to be able to charge from solar and provide reserve support to a relatively small home battery, say 10kWh. Hence the more complex bidirectional system. We rarely have power outages in my part of San Jose, so while I would have the ability for backup in a grid down scenario, its not a primary driver, although a major earthquake is a consideration. It may even make sense to sell power back to the grid during the highest peak pricing in September.

For most days of the year I'd never need to pull from the R2, or from the grid at peak evening power rates, even using a heat pump for home cooling or heating. The R2 would be there to augment multi-day low energy generation from solar, like the weather we seem likely to get next week.

It's been coming soon for years. Still not available. I will buy it when it exists, but it doesn't.
IIRC they are currently saying end of 2026. Seems like they and probably others were waiting for a number of standards to get finalized, but don't understand why the delay until the end of the year at this stage. I'll probably go Enphase for the whole system inc solar, home battery and charger but not making a move until everything is in full production and can be installed in one operation.

Here's the Enphase announcement from February 2023:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230205183534/https://enphase.com/ev-chargers/bidirectional
"We are working ... to bring this revolutionary technology to market starting in 2024"

And here's the first mention in these forums. Also from 2023:
But the demos look great ...

I already have the whole Enphase setup except for the bidi charger. I'm not sure if my inverters will need to be upgraded, or if I will need additional electrical work outside the meter collar - it's been a long time since I did a deep dive into the details and they keep moving the bar.

BTW, the standards were finalized in February 2025, so ...

Will this work for the 2026 r1s or r1t, since they have nacs port as well?
