Has any one done or would be able to do a comparison of charging at a RAN DC fast charger vs a third party like EA to see if the RAN DC fast chargers have a better CCS charging implementation.

Would love to know if Rivian is doing a better job at doing CCS charging especially if they are optimizing the CCS charging for Rivians.

@OutofSpecKyle @TFLtommy Do you think this is something you would be able to test or evaluate ?

Having used both, there’s no comparison when it comes to convenience. With the RAN you plug in and it just works. With EA you plug in and then spend 5 min trying to connect and then after 10 min you move to the next stall and try again. When you find an EA stall that does work it’s pretty good but still not as fast as the RAN. Disclaimer, I have not done any serious measurements to determine the charging curve (or slope, rather).

Plug and charge is definitely one benefit but it’s not the main one of a vertically integrated charging system, IMO. The main advantage should be the ability to deliver a constant Max charge rate.

Ford, VW, Porsche all seem to be doing plug in charge right with EA chargers based on reviews. So it shouldn’t take a lot of effort to get it right.

The Tesla Super chargers in my province of Ontario is a prime example. Almost all the SC across Ontario are their old V2 chargers, which are shared 150kw chargers. So while I like the convenience of plugging and charging, I am sitting at these chargers charging at about 60 - 70kW during busy times.
