Hi all - kind of a nit, but a pet peeve of mine has always been cars that use red/brake light colored turn indicators...I think there's been studies done about how unsafe they are, but for some reason auto makers think they look better or are cheaper or whatever so they keep coming out.

Looking at pictures of the Rivian, all I see is a row of red lights on the back...has anyone seen a video of one of these indicating? Are there amber lights hidden in that light bar somewhere?

All indications are there will be only red lights in back. Here's a thread where the lights were analyzed.

Thanks - didn't find that thread in my search. Too bad that they're going w/ the all Red approach. I can't count the number of times I've had to jam my brakes because I thought someone was just slowing down for an intersection rather than actually turning. I actually promised myself at one point that I'd never buy a car that doesn't have ambers.

Found this in a quick search:
A 2008 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study concluded that, in the real world, cars with red turn signals are, on average, 22 percent more likely to be hit from behind than cars with amber indicators during a turn-signal-relevant maneuver such as turning, changing lanes, or parking.

@turkvu I don’t believe you actually live in Texas. This behavior of seeing cars in front of you with activated turn signals (amber or red) is not something you’ve witnessed in Texas.

On a related note, as any BMW driver can attest, one simple solution to the problem you describe is never to use the turn signals and cause such confusion for the car behind you.

I dated a girl from San Antonio for a while that laughed every time I used the word indicator...she swore that everyone else in Texas called them blinkers

Here's a fun video about them

I agree that amber turn signals are much better. I definitely think car design should be safety/practicality over style.

I don't know about you guys, but I learned how to signal from Every which way but Loose.

This is a huge pet peeve for me too! My understanding was always that white lights (headlights and reverse lights) indicated a vehicle coming towards you, red lights were to indicate a reduction of speed/stopping, and then amber was for indicating a reason to pay attention or as a warning so something happening (turn signals to show slowing but change of direction, trash trucks use amber to indicate making their stops but also the arm extending, ...).
