This is what I did. I also printed a "sleeve" that's the right size for my Zojirushi thermos and/or standard diameter cans.If you have access to a 3d printer, there are a ton of cup holder "inserts" that have a cutout for a handle.

These 3MF or STL files exist everywhere and probably take an hour to print if you can find a buddy to do it for you. Probably $1 or less in filament (then again maybe you want something better than PLA/PLA+ if it'll sit in the heat of your car in the summer).

I printed a different holder designed by @RWerksman for large Nalgene bottles. It will work for mugs as well depending on their diameter:
