That kinda looks like the driver of the Prius is at fault. Crossed solid line. However, if the other driver was indeed intoxicated and confirmed with testing, that’s a different story I guess.
While you can say the Prius made an illegal lane change, crossing the solid white line, the SUV was at fault. They were coming at a high rate of speed to an intersection where all of the vehicles were stopped at a light. Had he not hit the Prius he would have blown through a red light.

If the SUV was traveling at the posted speed limit it would have had more than enough time and distance to stop before hitting the vehicles.

**** EDIT ****
You also cannot claim the Prius was at fault, even after an illegal lane change, as the Prius was established in the lane prior to the accident.
For all you speculators and backseat commentators, speed limit is 25mph, they were in a turn only lane with a red light, and it's only a single lane going through the light despite there being 2 green lights. It happened in Tacoma on Pacific Ave (I recognized the buildings in the background).

The wide angle cameras are also deceptive on speed. They make it look like objects are moving faster than they are. The Prius shares blame for pulling into moving traffic unsafely.

The SUV driver had their left blinker on way back, so either decided "F this red light, I'm going around them" or wasn't paying attention. Regardless of Prius error, if the driver obeyed 25mph they could have corrected and stopped. Double the speed, you triple the stopping distance. https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/stopping-distance

Pac Ave is notorious for speed demon drivers running up and down and driving like idiots. This one happened to imbibe and got caught doing both.

Hey folks - thanks for the support and comments. So - yes it was on Pacific in front of the Tacoma Art Museum. It all happened so fast that I only really know what happened from the cameras but my impression was that the guy was not slowing down, he was speeding, & yes he was drunk.

He didn’t offer help or give his information but instead tried to hide in the bushes and was belligerent towards people.

The irony is that right before this someone else blew thru the red - it’s a long light due to the light rail.

I just found out that my upload didn’t include the right side marker camera where the wheel took the energy from the crash.

Also note the gif conversion is not at full speed.
Cheers!

I've litigated PI cases and would absolutely argue (and with good reason) that the Prius driver was contributorily negligent if I represented the drunk driver. That said, not really your problem. Sue whoever struck you and let them bring them in as an additional at fault party if they want.

If the driver of the SUV was drunk, it was his fault. Rest of the story is irrelevant.

Sorry this happened to you, thank you for bringing it up. It's a good reminder to ensure cam storage is working every time.

Hopefully you get fixed up and back on the road soon!

Suv never slowed at all! Never even tried to avoid collision.I conclude artificially delayed reaction time. Why do you speculate the Prius was expending all that effort to go around you? Were you in a left turn lane.?

Happy to speculate!

Yes, that's a left turn lane. If they're "going home" it likely means passing the hospital, which that turn lane road dead-ends at. There are smoother routes to take than that light, like going up two blocks to 15th. I personally prefer 11th, stop by 1111 for a dank Reuben.

Glad that everyone is OK and hope the video evidence helps with insurance.

From a practical standpoint, sure, but that's not really how the law works. The Prius driver definitely carries some fault.

Just a quick up date on this not fun saga. So I’m still weeks out from getting my truck back. The auto body and insurance determined the truck is repairable.

Parts are 2-3 weeks out and “several” weeks for the repair. Total cost $15,915. While it’s there I’m getting some other bumps and scratches addressed. Oblivious I’m worried about how much hit I’ll take on the trade in value. I’m considering leasing but I won’t make the end of month cutoff so I think ill
Just keep it.

Final Update on My Rivian Repair Journey

Hey folks, time to close the loop on this one.

I got my truck back on Wednesday, May 7th—total repair time: 70 days. Final repair cost came to $27K, with another $4K for some non-accident-related fixes I decided to tackle while it was in. It also spent an extra two weeks bouncing around: first towed from Bremerton to Rivian Seattle to replace and re-pressurize the hydraulics, then down to TREW Auto Body in Olympia for a final “calibration.”

Overall, TREW did a solid job keeping me updated and getting things repaired. That said, I was disappointed the truck came back dirty—compound dust all over and grease marks on the plastic bumper. Also surprised that some light pinstriping wasn’t touched up.

Would I use them again? I guess I have to—seems like they’re the only real option in the region for Rivian.

On the plus side, the new suspension cleared up some old creaking noises and rides noticeably better. One wrinkle: they couldn’t just replace the damaged tie rod. It required an updated design, which meant redoing the whole front end. That triggered the bigger delay since TREW didn’t have the $50K hydraulic tools and had to work with Rivian to get it done without waiting two full months. Thankfully, that part worked out.

That said, this whole experience did sour me a bit on Rivian. I still love the truck—it’s an incredible vehicle—but it’s just hard to get them fixed. I got a great trade-in offer on a G2, but I’m honestly not sure I want to sign up for this kind of pain again. Especially considering the mixed reviews on the G2 and how expensive they are.
