I was so excited about my R1S preorder and today they pulled the bait and switch!
This is not only false advertising but bad business practice. They could care less about their potential customers that were taking a chance on a brand new vehicle manufacturer.
They could’ve respected all of the pre-orders that were already paid and upped the price for any new pre-orders.
The same configuration of the vehicle I had configured increased in price by 20%!!!!!

Complete BS! So bummed!

You really expect Rivian to subsidize pre-order customers to the tune of over a billion dollars? They're a business, not a charity.

I expect that they honor the price they quoted me when they took my thousand dollars for the preorder.
That’s not charity, that’s good customer service.

Unfortunately, your expectations do not align with the reality of the Rivian preorder agreement presented at checkout.

Amazing how most people didn't read, or understand the agreement before making the $1000 deposit. Or they thought they were special and it didn't apply to them.....lol.

What's so hard to understand about "does not lock in price"?

Despite the contract terms, I still think they are at least in a gray area under truth in advertising laws. The deceptively low prices they advertised kept many order holders out of the market for other vehicles. I don't think it's as cut and dry as "Rivian had a disclaimer tucked in there, so it's all above board." I'm sure there will be FTC complaints and I'm curious to see what comes of them.

Agreed ... the massive price increase was no fun and not the best from a customer satisfaction perspective, but totally within the Ts and Cs of the agreement everyone signed. At least they are keeping their word on deposits being refundable.

From a business perspective it would be an investment in good will from a vocal and loyal customer base. They just screwed over the people who were promoting them and were the most excited for their success. I doubt they would have been losing that much at the price they had promised. Also, they could have honored prices for LE orders, and then tapered the price increases to favor early adopters. As is, they burned a lot of goodwill.

I knew it was within their rights. I just think it was a dumb business move...and their stock price confirms this.

It is not that people didn't know what is legal. It is that you are usually surprised by your enemies not your friends. Rivian knew long before IPO if these prices were reasonable. They could have had some sort of heads up like; prices and options could be increased 10%-30% in Spring 2022 impacting most reservation holders. We are in process of figuring out the specifics. Either this was a surprise to them as well which means incompetence or they knew and thought keeping their reservation holders and stock holders in the dark is a good idea in which case they are untrustworthy. Neither of which is a characteristic of an entity a wise man do business with.

Well they strongly inferred delivery in June 2021, Nov 21, April 2022 at a certain price. No one expected it would be 2.5 years after reserving that product would be be available for purchase agreement. Disingenuous at least, deceptive at worst.

The email from Rivian today states that they apologize for the misleading information and will honor preorder prices if you reserved before March 1. I reserved Oct 2021 so I guess I’m not price locked.

They said Pre order not reservation. So I was confused if my reservation meant preorder. I thought preorder was if the Rivian guide reached out and started working with you already, which they have not.
