After playing around a bit more I want to clarify. There is no key card visible in the Google Wallet app whatsoever. The shortcut in the homescreen is actually to Google Play Services. Clicking it opens the image of the key card, with the lock/unlock options below. Clicking on the card opens up the options to use passive entry, change the name, delete the key, or click on another button which opens the Rivian app.
No option for a widget either. I'm generally very tech savvy and I must admit I am at a loss to explain what the point of this update is.
The key itself DOES run in Google Play Services. It should also show up in your Google Wallet though. Unlike credit cards, the phone key seems to run in Google Play Services once you select it -- this is also why key-related notifications are controlled by "Google Play Services" and not the Wallet. Have you tried swiping down in your wallet to see if its down below?

Sounds like removing and re-adding might fix the problem. I'd delete the key from the vehicle's interface and go through the pairing process again. Don't blame me if it doesn't work though, lol.

I went to go do this and it was now in my list of cards. Maybe just needed a couple of phone and car restarts to give it a little push.
Still don't get the point of it though.

Anyone know how to get rid of the constant notifications on my phone since upgrading to digital key? Every time it locks I get a "R1S locked" notification on my phone.

Here's how you fix that (because I too was annoyed by the constant "lock/unlock" notifications.)

Go to:

Settings (phone settings, not rivian app or wallet settings), Notifications, App Notifications. Then select "Google Play Services" from the list of apps. Select "Digital Car Key" from there and turn the slider to "off."
Thanks. I found that and was going to update the post, but you beat me to it.
Only question I had about it was what's considered "important notifications" vs everything else. Or does the system consider all notifications for the digital key to be important? Are there other notifications other than lock status that people have seen so far?

It uses UWB and will still work for a few hours after your phone battery dies.

My physical card will also work for a few hours after my phone dies. Once I have to fumble with taking something out of my pocket to hold it next to the handle, what advantage does it give me?

Maybe someone stole your wallet.

I am still learning about how this works and am holding off installing it until I fully get it. And in case the issues others are reporting are PBCAK and a fix isn't coming from Rivian.

Is the wallet key required for UWB proximity unlocking?

If the phone dies, does UWB proximity unlocking still work, or then do you have to resort to NFC unlocking?

It appears people are confused like I am. My understanding is the wallet key is for NFC use, and to me it is not really an improvement over the key card. But if it is required for UWB proximity unlocking, it is totally worth it and a significant improvement.

The digital key (ie the key in your wallet app of choice) supports both NFC and UWB/BLE, you do need to have NFC support, UWB/BLE is optional. Digital key is required to make use of UWB for proximity locking, Rivian’s own implementation remains BLE only.
  • NFC only digital key:
    • Kicks in when device is out of battery for UWB etc (and yes this is only a sure shot for a few hours after the phone/watch is out of battery - around 5 if I recall correctly in the apple ecosystem)
    • Used by phones without UWB but meet all the other criteria (OS version/Wallet support)
    • Acts like a keycard in Rivian Keycard in practice
    • Can be used alongside the Rivian BLE only implementation on phones with only NFC wallet support.
  • UWB+BLE digital key:
    • Used when UWB and BLE is available.
    • Operates like Rivians BLE only (ie original PAAK) implementation in practice.
      • but much more refined in terms of range estimation, as it uses real ranging over UWB rather than BLE RSSI to position key relative to vehicle.

Now I understand! Thank you very much for the clear explanation!

This post should be pinned somewhere. Very succinct and clear description of the differences. Thank you.

Bless you my child.
