I've been wondering whether these RAN stations will be exclusive to Rivian vehicles. Seems to me that would be a mistake. Anyone have any insight? Has Rivian said anything about this?
RJ said they will be Rivian only.

Umm. I was afraid that would be the case. How does that benefit Rivian, Rivian owners or the world at large?

Benefits are the obvious....more likely to have a vacant charging station for Rivian owners and less wear and tear on the chargers for Rivian.

But I agree, why not make it open to everyone. They could even charge non Rivian owners more since the payment system would work differently. Seems like a missed opportunity to me.

It's not like they'll be outfitting the sites with proprietary connectors. They may well open them up some day, but I can see wanting their owners to have a good experience and less competition for the chargers while they are still few and far between within these adventure areas.

I wonder why Rivian does not have a "suggestion box" on their web site for these station locations. EA has this on their web site and I have used it frequently to make station location suggestions and also other features like charge by KWH and have a trip planning App. They have listened so far and they now charge by KWH in most states, plus two of my suggested sites, Kingman AZ and Quartzsite AZ are now under construction. I am sure it is not just me, but others have made the same requests.

I have been vocal enough that EA invited me to a webinar tomorrow morning to discuss their plans for Cycle 3, which starts in 2022. Hopefully those of us who attend can ask questions, and I will certainly ask if they intend to provide more rural locations off the interstate and also if they plan to cover states like Wyoming, North and South Dakota and Montana. These are definitely of interest to those on this forum.

Since they are starting with zero, they have too many choices already. Once they have a significant number of station, they might start asking for suggestions.

In the EA webinar this morning they indicated several requests were made for either I-90 or I-94 from Minneapolis to Butte Montana. They are considering that for cycle 3 (2022-2024). The Cycle 3 plan should be on their web site early spring of 2021.

I was assuming people would make suggestions based on the knowledge of where existing CCS stations are located.

Amen, brother. Looking at the RAN map on the Rivian Charging page, there's a big hole just below the center of the USA where I-40 runs between OKC and New Mexico. I live in Little Rock, and my hometown is Amarillo, so I travel that stretch semi-annually. Appears to be the longest stretch of Interstate without RAN in the whole country. :(

Out of curiosity, have you checked with A Better Route Planner to see if others have that covered for now? I'm with you, I'd prefer to have the RAN cover everywhere, eventually, but ABRP will allow you to enter either Rvian, by battery size, and find the most convenient stations along your route.

When mentioning charging holes around a large portion of the West near where Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada come together, I've also commented that the areas you mentioned above appear to be grossly under-served.

Before the mainstream population will ever embrace the EV movement, DCFC charging stations are going to have to be prevalent enough to eliminate those no-roll zones. It'll be annoying if we have to sit and wait at a station for a unit to open up, but it's more annoying when there are no stations and you simply can't drive-through a given part of the country.

If this nation can all but eliminate Polio and Disco, there's no reason we can't stamp out Range Anxiety as well.

Dammit! Now I'm stuck with a BeeGee earworm!

LOL!

It's going to be tough to make sure our Rivians are Stayin' Alive on those long stretches without charging.

Nicely played! I was going to use a Stayin' Alive line, but the mere thought of it sent me running for the bathroom. Luckily, I didn't hurl, but that earworm is excrutiating!

That chorus always sounds like a family-colonoscopy-without-anastesia-gone-bad scene out of a Stephen King novel. You know, something like "Children of the Cornh...."... oh....nevermind....
