I swear, not 6 months ago I was hearing how Rivians had some of the worse EV resale value around, with low-mileage quads going for $50k. Now, I'm hearing that that Rivian is a shining exception to the rest of the industry.

Am I remembering wrong, or did something change that caused this turnaround?

Bring a Trailer has a graph that can get you an idea. Yes, it's only one data source, so use it as reference only.

To answer your question, data shows that R1T were in the $50K range at one point. Be aware that the graph does not include buyer's fee. So, add that in and people are paying $60K-ish.

Initial depreciation—which is bad for just about everything, EV or otherwise—vs what comes after that. Initial depreciation is big. But curve of depreciation is not as steep after that. Part of that is likely due to demand from the Tesla defectors.

My guess it's a shorter term support floor from Tesla defectors. Once the fervor has died down or the vast majority of the switches completed; you'll see the large depreciation drops again.

Right and by then R2 will be the demand/value & volume driver.

I think the change in depreciation numbers are the result of Rivian being further removed from the early deposit pricing and having more vehicles sold under their now inflated mostly six figure prices.

A lot of the data is based on the lower msrp of the gen 1, and now having a higher average transaction price on the used market due to the newer models costing so much more.

I anticipate the depreciation will become a lot worse as more gen 2s hit the used market because the msrp is so high. But for Gen 1 owners that got early pricing, you are golden.

I can tell you I just went to Carmax couple days ago. They offered me $60K for my 2024 quad R1S, large battery pack, off-road package or adventure package whatever they were calling it, black 20 inch off-road wheels and tires and basically every other option at the time. 18,000 miles on it. A couple of months ago I was getting offers of at least $65k. Sticker was $96.9k

Go look at the used Porsche Taycan, MB EQS, EQS-SUV Audi eTron and so on. Two to three years old EVs are at 50% of purchase price or worse. These are all "premium vehicles", much more so than Rivian.

There are many examples of EVs with few hundred thousand miles but they most are are less than 7 years old or less. There is no extensive old EV data, other than early Model S that's over 10 yrs old. And I don't know how many of those are in existence.

EVs should be more reliable inherently due to less parts and simpler build. That said, there is no conclusive data to show for old vehicles since they do not exist before 2012 in large numbers.

There is no 18” wheel option. It wouldn’t ever fit over the brakes.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Those of us with early pricing are the outliers in terms of depreciation, I imagine, but my purchase price was 77k - call it 70k after federal refund.

Currently seeing '22s with low miles in the mid 50k range. $50k is lowest, but with 60k miles or more. $60k is highest with low miles (20k miles).

Puts my depreciation at 20% after almost 3 years, which is pretty awesome.
