I used route in vehical route planner. For some reason it only selects RAN and electrify America only. I have selected all the chargers in the setting. Still it will for some reason use RAN and electrify America with B rating when there is compatible tesla with better rating within Mile. That's annoying.
It sounds like you need to adjust your settings so that the route planner knows you have an adapter and can use the Tesla sites. If you don't tell it that, it's not going to route you to a NACS charger.

Just returned from a road trip from SoCal to Zion NP to Bryce Cyn NP then Las Vegas and back. 1200+ miles all charging done at Tesla's network except for some free charging at our hotel near Zion. Total cost for charging $160, including the $13 for the Tesla monthly membership.

I have that setting on.

Well you have to find the right setting, because the Rivian route planner definitely does show and select Tesla chargers. Assuming the Tesla charger is open to non-Tesla vehicles ... In fact there are a lot of posts here questioning why the route planner prefers Tesla over RAN, so what you're seeing is not typical and almost certainly related to your settings.

I currently drive an EV6, the in car navigation is terrible, the GUI is hard to use and it is way to conservative on telling me I'll arrive at the destination at XX% and need to stop in charge when I've done the drive multiple times and know I don't need to stop. I routinely arrive at my destination +5% greater then the nav tells me. I generally use Plugshare to scope out a route and chargers. I also have to navigate to a charger to get the battery preconditioning to work.

Having said all of this, how good is the Rivian navigation? Is there truly a need to do a lot of preplanning because the native nav isn't accurate or hard to use?

Thanks.
Did our first road trip from Phx to Connecticut last year and had the whole thing planned out using natural and artificial intelligence. Charging stops, places to eat, where to see the largest ketchup bottle and picnic basket, hotels and so on. We learned very quickly that the truck was way better at figuring all of that out in real time. Add some intentional filters to the results and it was a seamless and enjoyable time. All we cared about then was where to go, not where to charge. Did preselected charging for day 1 and half of day 2 before we decided to just go where we wanted to and let the truck decide when to charge.

We're doing it again this year.

When I'm on a road trip, I plan where to charge based on convenience not cost (where to eat/sleep and, of huge importance to me, support for plug-and-charge). Charger reliability scores and availability factor in to a lesser degree (which has resulted in my now having several preferred networks), but never cost.

Is there a way to add Hotels and Campgrounds in the route planning in ABRP? That sure would be nice. Especially if you could see which hotels offer free EV charging.

Also when traveling where do you find the best charging cost. Some places sure do mark up the cost a lot.
Pay the $12.99/mo for the Tesla membership when road tripping. Usually drops rates into the sub $0.40/kWh range. Then set the nav in the truck to prioritize Tesla stations. Input destination in the truck; follow directions.

You can spend a TON of effort to find the absolute cheapest route, and/or the fastest route, however it's all going to be within minutes of the above plan and within a few dollars of the above plan. That is to say, it's largely not worth the effort.

You can cancel the Tesla membership when you return home from your trip with no additional fees. Start it again for the next road trip a few months later.

Also, I'm curious what app does this for a gas powered vehicle and if anyone spent this much time worrying/researching/planning for that?!?! EV charging is largely strong enough now that you can treat a Rivian like a "regular" truck and just use the in dash nav and follow directions.

Awesome to hear, that is the experience I'm looking for and excited about. More folks who have that type of experience will help grow EVs. In my ICE I do a little route planning but I never plan where to get gas, with a good native nav system I'm hoping to hop in and go.

But don't leave us hanging, where is the largest ketchup bottle?

Yes, all of this! Thank you!

While charging is most always cheaper than buying gas there is a huge disparity in pricing from different networks. There can be an EVGO charger at $0.60/kWhr and right next door a Tesla at $0.35. And sometimes in the same parking lot. It is definitely aggravating that finding pricing isn't as easy as with a gas station with a giant sign that you can see from the freeway. Often times you don't even know the price when you initiate the charge. Hopefully that improves over time, though it may take legislation.

Level 2 can be even worse. There were Volta chargers at the ice rink where I play hockey. They were free with a 3 hour limit and busy all the time. Then Shell bought Volta and rebranded as Shell Recharge. Still free but 1 hour limit. That didn't help availability because everyone playing a game was in there for 2+ hours anyway. Then they started charging for them. I believe it is $0.46/kWhr + $1.49 connection fee. Generally I'd only get about 6kW out of them, so an hour to get 6 kWhr of charge would cost $4.25, or an average of $0.71/kWhr. I pay $0.11/kWhr at home, which is fairly typical for the area. So now these charging spots sit mostly empty. Same thing has happened with other Shell chargers in shopping centers around the area. At that pricing they are emergency use only, so generally a waste of a good parking spot.

At first I thought you were talking about the ice rink here in MD that went through the identical evolution :CWL:, free Volta to widely expensive Shell. Ours never and don't currently have a time limit though. I see cars plugged into them, but I can't image anyone paying that much, I wonder if they are plugged in but not charging to get a spot closer to the front door.

Ha! OK

Near Collinsville Illinois. 170 feet tall. Built in the late 40s for the Brooks Rich & Tangy Catsup bottling plant. I'm super curious about what that flavor was all about. The bottle is 70 feet itself on a 100 foot tower. It used to hold water for the bottling plant.

Wow, I've charged in Collinsville many times and did not know about this. I'll have to check it out next time I pass through.

Town didn't seem huge. All the trees could easily block the view though. I could understand not noticing it.
