I was wondering if there’s any benefit to the rivian wall charger verses just getting a Tesla with the j1772 port or Juicebox/similar 48A charger? Any proprietary features I’d be missing out on? Most seem to have decent apps that allow for timed charging when it’s cheaper, etc.

Thanks, Lee

I think this has been discussed in other threads but you won't be missing out on any functionality other than the charger shows up in the Rivian mobile app. There is no functionality associated to the charger directly everything is controlled by the vehicle. Very minimal stats displayed for the charger, only: Power, Voltage, Amperage, Software version, and Model. I keep hoping they'll add more stats and history but nothing so far.

No, remember these aren’t actually chargers, they are EVSE - electric vehicle supply equipment. I chose a third party unit as I like they’re Wi-Fi connectivity and app interface. Choose the one that works for you, including the Rivian unit is that’s the one you like.

I highly recommend the OpenEVSE, of which I have two. Awesome unit for continuous use at home, and if you get the 14-X plug version, handy to take on the road too. Easy to repair, and the software gets continuous improvements from some really great open source developers. Full control via the web interface, HTTP API, HomeAssistant Integration, OCPP, solar production tracking, and more.

Only "downside" is lack of UL listing (meaning you didn't pay for that either), but the components are absolutely top shelf.

I dunno about the others but I use the Rivian wall unit to charge both my T and my Tesla (with adapter). Works just fine.

Great info…. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to share some ideas and point me in the right direction. First stop is OpenEVSE, and I’ll check out some others.
Thanks!

The Rivian wall charger is a great value for $500 if you have pre-price hike. Otherwise, there a bunch others with more features for more $$

I bought an Emporia and it works fine, but man... Now I'm really bumming that I didn't know about OpenEVSE :(
