I'll be taking delivery of a new 2024 R1T soon and have a shore diving trip planned where I'd like to be able to take the truck. In the past what I've done with an ICE truck was to use a hitch safe to hold the key, or with a vehicle that had an ordinary lock on the door to make a dumb key and go diving with that on me while the actual key was hidden inside the car. The dumb key is not an option, and I'm unsure if the hitch safe is either due to the small space inside it or the proximity.

I can't take my phone, or presumably the fob, on the dive as neither would survive for long submerged in salt water. I still have the hitch safe, which can be installed in any common receiver hitch. That doesn't have a lot of room inside it though, and I'm not sure if the fob would fit - or if it did would that do any good since the fob would likely be in range.

My hitch safe is this,

What do you guys do if you can't take your phone or fob with you and need to secure your Rivian?

I normally lock my phone or fob inside the truck using the key card (or wrist band that came with Launch Editions). Mine stays locked in spite of the proximity settings.

Is the key card waterproof? Would it be safe to take that in the ocean? I assume there's a chip on the card, and that might be ruined if submerged in water. Saltwater being especially corrosive, the ocean might be a really bad plan for a key card.

Alternatively, would the vehicle be secure if the key card was in a hitch safe? I'd imagine that would fit easily inside as the hitch safe is designed to hold a key, credit card, etc.

Is there an RF-secure (faraday) slip for the key card? I've seen some things like this on other chip-enabled cards.

EDIT: I found this here on the forum that answers part of the question: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...r-to-access-your-r1t-and-r1s.5310/post-142865

So, the fob is IP67 rated while the key band and key card are IP69. Based on this I would definitely not recommend taking either of them into the ocean. The video of a woman in surfing gear using her wristband may be good marketing, but would likely not be a smart practice.

Still curious about a farday slip for the key card and how that might help secure it if its in the hitch safe. Maybe something like this?

I think stashing it in the hitch safe would work then. The card only unlocks the truck if it’s held against the driver’s door handle. Faraday slip could be an extra precaution though.

Just vacuum seal the key card and take it with you
I was thinking this as well since I usually put all my stuff in a waterproof bag or at least a ziploc when I go to the beach and snorkel, but that of course isn't the same as going diving to deeper depths.

I've taken my key card in the lake already and have no issues. Locked my phone in the truck, and brought the key card with me. I also had a shortcut on my Apple Watch to unlock the truck.
