Show rooms?

Not that I have to worry about for likely at least a year, (currently says 1st half 2023), but what would be the best place to see a few R1S’s i. Different colors? Are they doing the car show circuits? Any stores planned anywhere in the Midwest? Glacier white ordered, but way to much to spend on a vehicle without some hands on time.

To my knowledge Rivian doesn’t do most of the car shows, although they did their big reveal at the Los Angeles Auto Show a few years ago. They seem to be just starting deliveries of R1Ss, but there are just not that many out there to see yet. A few photos have been captured out and about, but most have manufacturer plates. The only other place to possibly catch one would be at a Rivian service center. I’m not aware of all the locations, but I know where I live the Denver service center is still the place most of us go to catch a look at either R1 vehicle. You might search the forums or just ask Rivian CS if there is an Iowa location… If not I’m sure there would be one in a neighboring state.

Hopefully they will have an R1S on display at the Venice Hub in the near future. Can't test drive there but can at least get hands on. They are still doing test drive events which at the moment seem to be of the "come to you" variety. Remains to be seen if they will schedule any more of the big, regional test drive events with off-road courses. Your best bet may be to arrange a meetup with someone that takes delivery later this year.

I'm still amazed they don't have a showroom closer to the factory. They kept talking about a Chicago showroom, but then it was canceled. Then a new location in Chicago was identified, but I have not heard whether that's any closer to opening than it was 3 months ago.

In think the Chicago showroom idea got shut down after the Illinois Dealer Association lawsuit. They are planning a service center just north of the United Center.

Car shows are usually sponsored by dealer associations. So don't expect them to invite Rivian with open arms.

There is a locations thread that I have spent some time digging through and it looks like the KC area is the best we (Iowans) are going to do for a while. The Chicago service center will probably be the source for your service and delivery, but I am VERY curious where mine will come from in the Oct-Dec '22 delivery window since I am in no-man's land in Eastern IA. I can't see the Chicago service center being open by then and I am 4 - 5 hours away from anything planned at this point anyway. It feels like Des Moines would be an obvious place for a small service center, but I'm sure there aren't enough pre-orders to have that make sense.

As for not spending the money without seeing it - I totally agree, but get ready to be disappointed. I would love to entertain the idea of blue or red for the exterior, but I also chose white simply because I don't expect to get to see the colors in person before handing over $80k.
