As mentioned above, if one plans to do any off-roading, no matter how little the chance, it is enough of a percentage that it is better to be with it and not need it, than need it and be stuck out in who knows where-land without it.
Nowhere did I say don’t take a spare tire when off reading.

I’m saying for 90% of the owners out there, they will most likely not be driving anywhere but on road and will not need a spare.

If you go off road,do then do the same thing I do. Pick up a spare. If you’re worried about payload and or weight and willing to deal with the hassle, put the spare on a tire rack and load it up when you head out.

90%of us won’t need a Yakima tent either. This is the equivlwant of saying if you plan on doing any camping you should have a shelter…not really a surprise.

But if you instead fill that space with ice and beer, you won’t care that you’re stranded. ?

I once had a blow out on an interstate where there was no cell service...driving without a spare, please spare me...

I personally am not interested in being without a spare. It just seems like you could pick up a spare and wheel for well under $800 - because who cares if it matches?. I ordered it anyway, mostly because it's one less thing I need to think about and it comes with some needed hardware (or so I believe).

My pretty long driving history with fortunate lack of need for spares and reasonable contingency options for most of the on and off road driving we usually do drove some of my thinking around not opting for one. With all the opinions here considered and some of the things we're likely to do with the R1T that we haven't with past vehicles, I'm feeling like I should have ordered the spare kit - penny-wise... Wondering if that can cost-effectively be done after delivery.

For now, I think the uniqueness of the vehicle/tire/wheel by itself would make it worth while. Even if you can be reasonably reached or extracted, chance of waiting for replacement tire is high if it can't be repaired.

I could always take it out for the majority of driving we do that's less risky if the weight/space are an issue. That's what i did with our '99 Miata last weekend - Too perfect out to not take it but needed to bring a cooler. Out came the "doughnut" and we were golden. The spare, not so much. Hadn't been touched perhaps since new. That's now remedied... just in case.

According to my guide, you will be able to order a spare wheel/tire through the Gear Shop “later this year.” She didn’t know what the pricing would be. Just in case anyone who didn’t order one initially changes their mind.

When ordered with the vehicle it comes with the jack and tools. Not sure it would if ordered through the gear shop at a later date.

In April I came back from a 3000 mile trip and had a blowout on a new cargo trailer. 10:00 on Saturday night, trying to get over a mountain pass before the coming snow and like an idiot - no spare. The trailer didn't come with one and I hadn't managed to "get around" to picking one up (new tires... Freeway only... What's the hurry??). 3:00am and $500 later, I had a used replacement installed - the replacement looked ready to blow too. ?? But it put me in business - even though I now had to contend with heavy snow on a pass that would have been bare and dry if I could have gotten underway within an hour or two.

I was even packing an impact tool. I could have literally been back on the road in about 10 minutes if I just had that darn spare. It's just another form of insurance - useless and a waste of money until you need it. Maybe you get lucky. You can opt out if you feel like playing the odds. I'll opt for the spare!

I have plugged many tires (most on the vehicle) but I wouldn’t go out without a spare if I have a choice. In fact having A full size spare with me is the most tempting feature of R1T that makes me question my choice of R1S. If I go through with R1S, I will probably get two spares. Carry the small one locally and the full size on long trips.

I know this is not typical but I have had two blowouts in the span of one year. One of them was with a car with no spare and the other with a donut locally. A world of difference between my experience. Even when nothing bad happens when I take the sport car a little farther away outside my comfort zone, knowing I have no spare negatively impacts how I feel about the day. We prefer to explore new areas unplanned and often find paths that are unpaved and I have found my self avoiding some of them because I didn’t have a spare with me. Most of the time, it is a dead weight I won’t use but I think of having a spare with me like I think of having a vaccine in my arm; I do my best to make sure nothing hits the fan but I would like to be able to handle it if it does.

I'm fully aware of this. I addressed that in my first response to you.

And where exactly will you "pick up" this spare with a rim that fits this Rivian? NO one else sells rim size that fits the Rivians. And cost-wise they come out the same. It's better off to buy it off Rivian from the get go and have that there.

Relevance? The full sized spare is a much more "needed" item than the Yakima tent. I've already mentioned that I do plan to go off-roading (not off-reading ;) ) in my R1T, but never stated I'll be staying long term where I'll need to rest up in a tent.
