Steering Wheel Finish Peeling

Any chance you had bug spray on your hands and made contact with the steering wheel?

Pretty much all the dark gray plastic surfaces throughout the vehicle has some sort of top layer coating. Bug spray and some suntan lotions will begin to dissolve the coating and it subsequently fails.

Also, just general rubbing overtime will make it begin to peel. I have a spot on my lower driver side seat that I always hit with my heel and it is peeling badly.

I am hoping someone can find a spray can of this stuff to do touch up as I think it will become more common as the vehicles age.

At $220, I think I'll opt for the aftermarket carbon fiber cover at $32. It not only looks better, but it will probably outlast the truck.

I have the same peeling in the same spot as the original post. Mine happens to be at the SC now. They're going to try to replace under warranty... but if not, my charge is around $220 somehow.

They shouldn't charge you for it. I had the same issue and I was not charged to have it corrected.

The finish on the lower spokes of my R1T steering wheel are starting to peel. My R1T is a year and a half old and has 10,000 miles on it. The finish in this area of the steering wheel is not very dureable.

Have others experienced this issue and what have you done about it?

I don't see any way to fix this and am planning to order a carbon fiber steering wheel trim cover.

Mine is doing it also in that same area but is much bigger. I never put my hand there either.

known issue. open a service ticket, they will replace the bezel/cover piece that's peeling. had the same service done on my R1T (25k miles) under warranty

This is something they could easily replace using their mobile service, if they can train and hire more techs. Because who wants to take it in to a SC only for them to take four weeks, three of which the vehicle is sitting idle in their parking lot.

Mine was replaced by a mobile tech. He was done within an hour in my driveway.

I don't wear wedding band and i have the peelings on both sides of mine. SC said they can order a replacement steering. I told them not to worry; i don't want my vehicle just hanging out with them for weeks.

FWIW I had my steering wheel replaced due to some leather issues from the factory and they had it done in a couple hours on the same day of my service center appointment. I also have a mobile service coming up for a screeching sound from the steering wheel when telescoping.
