I did 1-6 the minute things opened up for me and I was assigned a VIN. But (color me skeptical) I decided not to send my payment (step 7) until I had some inkling of when I could expect delivery of the truck (step 8).

The Rivian process even says you can punt on step 7 and delay your payment until later, i.e. closer to delivery. But it concerns me somewhat that Schedule Delivery is grayed out in the app, as though it's waiting on $ before moving to the next stage:

Anybody else seen this? I pinged my guide and he said that delivery should be "2-4 weeks" but hasn't provided any other info. He also said delaying payment was fine. I am just antsy and would love to see an actual date materialized SooN... :)

Wondering if a date will miraculously show up in the app one day or if I should just wait until my guide reaches out with more info. Or just pester my guide nonstop...

Once a VIN is assigned, it is usually the time for transport to the closest service center and whatever delay/backlog the service center has for completing the PDI and delivery. Both are dependent on where you are and how busy the local center is...

For me, it was about 4 days from getting the VIN to having it off-loaded at the service center, and another 5 days until I had it in my driveway.

I had the same concern about having to complete the payment step before being scheduled for delivery, but that is not the case. Once the truck is at the local service center, someone from that location (not your guide) should reach out to schedule the delivery. Your guide, however, should be able to tell you when the offload at the service center is scheduled.

This was as of a few weeks ago, doubt it has changed since then.

Also, I paid with cashiers check *at* delivery (other than the $1,000 deposit), this was offered by my guide and seemed to pose zero issues for the process.

I am in the exact same situation! I do not want to pay for truck and not receive it for a month. I was quoted the same 2-4 week window. So I am waiting until they tell me it is ready to deliver.

What did you have to do for insurance? Did you need to start your policy with the VIN assigned or just show you HAD current insurance then you have the normal 30 days to get everything taken care of?

I got a policy from my existing provider (USAA) and set an arbitrary start date (two months from now). That generated an insurance card tied to the VIN, which I shared with Rivian. At some point (whenever I get an actual date or at least an estimate) I'll just update USAA with the actual start of coverage.

I had the guide scheduled the delivery before I completed payment.

I also did not wire the payment, but instead got a cashier's check and uploaded a screenshot of it - just in case if delivery was delayed, money wasn't stuck.

I only signed up for insurance 1 day before delivery.

I uploaded my insurance quote then it shows pending review. The next step then opened up for me. Eventually once scheduled delivery was set, at that point i already decided who to go for insurance and when i want the effective date to start. Then i uploaded the insurance card that shows the new effective and expiration dates.

I can confirm that they are still relying on the service center to schedule delivery. Step 8 won't open up for you. It will just go from locked to completed.

I received my guide/VIN/8 Steps mid last week and completed all steps except insurance, payment, and delivery. Today the service center texted me and gave me the earliest opening they had available. I confirmed it worked and step 8 "completed" in my account after they put it on the schedule.

You're giving me hope. Damn you.

I got the text it was complete before I was done with any steps. Mine is at delivery stage greyed out but delivery person sent text for me to set up a time with her to pickup at factory.

Unlike every other new vehicle I have purchased where showing proof of insurance for another currently insured vehicle with identical ownership is sufficient, I was told that Rivian requires proof of insurance for the specific truck delivered with matching VIN. My guess is that this is because they are relatively new "dealers" in each state they are selling in and aren't as familiar with the state requirements. I know Colorado DMV accepts 'other vehicle with same ownership' proof of insurance when registering a new vehicle, but Rivian is likely just being overly cautious to prevent kick-backs from DMV.

I didn't use Rivian insurance (their quotes were almost double), and just waited until I had a firm delivery date before having my agent start the policy... The day before delivery, I uploaded a photo of the cashiers check and the VIN specific proof of insurance through the website and confirmed receipt of those items with my guide.

My insurer requested that I not do this... I was told that in the above scenario, it requires fully cancelling the first policy and re-writing it as a new policy, not just simply changing the dates. Not a huge deal, but not ideal from their perspective.

Perhaps USAA is different as well.

IDK. My agent suggested this approach. I just said that I didn't want to start paying insurance for a car that I didn't yet own...

Awesome thanks! I'll work with my provider on this as well.

@Taco - I was assigned a VIN late Thursday and opened 8 steps on Friday am. I am really close to the SC so I stopped by on Saturday. My truck was NOT there. I stopped by an hour ago and my truck was there. It was pretty dusty so I'm guessing it showed up in the past day or so.

There were probably about a 12-15 trucks that looked like they were for customers and a handful in other areas that gave me the impression there were loaners/mobile drive trucks (MI plates) or employee trucks (CO plates).
