I just got the email asking me to lock in the configuration for my R1S and am struggling with the wheel/tire options.

I'm most concerned about range and handling ability in the snow - I live in Denver and drive tot he mountains every weekend in the winter to ski. I'm leaning towards the 22s and replacing the stock tires with the Michelins when they are released this spring. My question is am I going to be ok on the stock tires for the bulk of the winter or do I need to replace the tires immediately? And more globally, is this the right decision or should I just go with the 21s and the all-season stock Pirellis?

Go with the 22s. You'll be glad you did.

I live in Minnesota and went with them. I'll give them a go this winter, if its terrible, I'll get some winter tires and swap and I'll prob get the Michelins when these stock tires wear out.

Whatever you do don't go with the 21" tires. unless you like dropping 2k when your tires go bald at 15k miles

Someone did a good cost analysis of the break even point for tire wear speed, "fuel cost", and tire replacement cost for the wheel sizes.

Within one or two tire purchases the 20s will pay for themselves and make up the estimated cost of range inefficiency compared to the 21s due to cost and availability of 21 tires vs the 20s

Get the 21's (no cost option), and replace the wheel to 20" and fit 275/60/20 All season tires. This combo has the same tire diameter as the 275/55/21 OE tires.

There are several members here that has done this and they report good range with lots of tire options.

I’d go with 20’s or 22’s. I personally have the 22” wheels and will replace my tires with the new Michelin tires once I need them.

Just go to Costco.com and see for yourself. Just enter 275/60/20. In my area, there are 9 different AS options at Costco for this size.

If you had 20" OE AT tires, you'd need to get Rivian to change the speedo to 21" though.

If you are planning to go off-road at all, got with the 20" (more rubber to protect the wheels). I got the 22" and I always freaking out.

Why would he get the 21's just to replace them with 20's? Wouldn't he be better off just opting for the 20's from the start?

I have found the stock 22s to be unreliable in icy conditions. 'Dry' snow is fine, but wet and icy snow is a showstopper.
I've read on here about options for winter 22s, but haven't tried them myself.

Because it will most likely cost less than optioning for 20" AND have extra set of wheels/tires. Also no need to redo speedo reset by Rivian if he doesn't want the AT tires by going with 21". OP didn't want to sacrifice lost range by going wit 20" AT setup. Use of 275/60/20 will result in better range than 275/65/20.

If you get 20" and pay Rivian for the option, then the only way to improve range from tire selection is by going to either the OE 21" or 275/60/20, and have the speedo reset to 21" by Rivian - both requiring additional cost on top of the 20" option.

Thanks for all the replies. I locked in the 22s with the intention of replacing the tires with all season tires this winter if I don't like the performance of the stock tires.
