Tailgate MTB pad - Rivian R1T

I just got from Amazon the GoHimal mtb paid. Fits pretty well but not sure about long distances but here is what it looks like installed and I did put a bungie cord to keep it from swaying. I took it for a drive around the neighborhood and it seemed very secure. I think it is listed on Amazon for $104 or so. However, I was lucky and got it for $84 with a $20 coupon...so $64. In thought for the price, it was worth the gamble. I do have a 1-up bike rack which I would use for a longer trip and/or one where I need the bed of the truck.

Has anyone compared efficiency with a couple bikes on a tailgate pad vs. on a hitch rack? I currently use a one up but I am guessing that efficiency would be much better with a pad. Any real world feedback?

I haven't done any - I would think it would be minimal - but for short drives and ease of set-up I think I may prefer the tailgate pad. Also you may need to turn off the rear sensors even with the pad.

Just FYI you may want to put your disc brake on the outside (instead of the inside closer to the truck) when putting your bike on the tailgate pad - could rub against the truck and cause damage!

Thanks for the tip...I was thinking about that exact thing..but I think you are right..I'll put the disk on the outside.

I haven't done anything formal, but anecdotally, my efficiency with a tailgate pad is unchanged from my efficiency with no cargo, whereas my efficiency with a hitch rack is marginally worse.

Yes….I was using a hitch mounted carrier and was getting like 1.5-1.7 m/kw I have switched to a tailgate pad and get 2s again…plus I can carry more bikes and heavier e-bikes without worrying
