Tank Turn-Anyone heard more about this?

There were some great videos from Rivian about a year or so ago, but nothing new. I thought the winter testing could have been a perfect time to show the R1T/S spinning in the snow. Anyone seen or heard anything new? I assume this will still be part of the launch software package?

As of today Customer Service says...

"Yes, all Rivian vehicles with quad motors can tank turn. The R1T and R1S will have this capability at launch.

Also, I make it a point to ask about test drives everytime I talk to CS and today they said they are hoping to have an event in Normal (and other locations) prior to production and they'll tell us more "here soon".

Probably would be terrible for the tires. In the Tank Turn short clip there was mud flying everywhere. The way I think about it is that the mud was going everywhere because it was softer that the tires that were spinning on it. If you do it on pavement then the tires or gonna be the softest part of that equation...

What I'm worried about is them geo-fencing the feature so that it can only be done in certain locations (RJ mentioned this in an interview). I think his concern was that people would be dumb and rip trials to pieces.

Interesting choice of words (emphasis added above). This seems to imply there will be Rivian vehicles that don't have quad motors, although all vehicles available at launch do.

There is plenty more coming after the R1 and post-launch vehicles are already in the works.

That's been assumed for a long time, imo.

From the way I've seen some of their drivers just drive over my lawn instead of doing a 3 point turn, I'm sure if they had tank turn they would be doing it in the trucks.

Do not worry, RJ has mentioned many things in interviews that have not come true.

There was an article that quoted a Rivian spokesperson that indicated the vehicle will determine whether terrain is appropriate for tank turn by “estimating the surface friction before enabling the feature.”

If I were to design it, I would probably do a two part test by first locking the rear wheels and apply a certain amount of torque to the front wheels to determine if any rotation occurs from slippage due to the level of ground friction and then repeat with the front wheels locked and torque on the rear. I am certainly looking forward to giving this mode a whirl; literally.

I hope they don’t overcomplicate it. Let owners choose when they use the feature. I’m not a fan of having too many nannies. Personal responsibility and accountability should be the standard.
