No, but Alexa can save your addresses, and it recognizes voice dictation way better than Siri does. So it's not a huge problem.

Better than Siri is a low bar.

I applaud the fact that Rivian is not force-feeding Google or Apple on me and will allow me to exclusively use the built-in nav. Some of the kinks OP is describing will be worked out.

They're force-feeding Amazon Alexa, however... Which is at least as bad, from a privacy perspective, if not worse (I think worse).

I’ll 100% be disabling Alexa when I get my car. I’m aware I’ll lose some features but I’m okay with that.

I know I’m cynical, but I doubt disabling it actually alleviates the privacy concern. You may not be able to use the features, but I bet it still listens, all the time.

For people reading this that do not yet own the R1T/S, I actually really enjoy the navigation software. It's worked well for me in Northern California. The navigation and Spotify are VERY responsive with no noticeable lag.

We had a 2019 XC40 and the carplay rarely worked properly and the info screen was very laggy.
Agreed. I have no issues with the navigation system. I think it works well. I drive in the Mid-Atlantic region, not Seattle, so I can't speak to that.

I realize I am definitely in the minority here, but I have never been a fan of Android Auto, and always go for the built in nav option if possible. I have never had it work seamlessly 100% of the time in terms of connecting and being responsive, this is across multiple phones and cables. It works okay 80% of the time, but often I have to reconnect, unlock the phone, or some combination of the two. Maybe this is alleviated with wireless Android Auto, but I have no experience with that. I also am not a fan of Google's search optimization where it has a mix of your search history and what it thinks you want to go to next in terms of relevant results, i.e. it would often show me locations of chains much further away from me as more relevant selections.

I much prefer built in nav that is on when the car is on, and I can put in a address and go.

All this is to say, I bet I won't mind their nav.
Android Auto blows goats.

I doubt it, not sure how to test though.

I know there is a setting to disable voice activation requiring a button push to initiate a request. Seems like if you can do that disabling the system would not listen as well.

I guess we’ll have to see! Someone set up wireshark and grab packet captures from your Rivian! Lol

This come up all the time and folks understandably get upset. What is best for you in the short term, may not be best for the product in the long term...So think a little less about "me, me, me" and a bigger product picture. You bought a v1.0 car from a v1.0 company in a v1.1 industry (technology platform based on transportation).

Lets just quickly review Apple:
OS X 1.0 Aqua barely usable
Safari: 1.0 not great
iPhone 2G/3G AT&T in cities on launch cannot make phone call
Apple Watch 1.0: Horrible OS, no apps, then apps needed to be re-written
Apple Maps: Far inferior to Google at launch
Apple Music: See above
itools, MobileMe, .Mac, and now icloud: Still working on it

Should Apple have listened to all the complaining and just used Google or Microsoft solutions because they were better?

No...So, be part of the process, or just buy mature products...

Hey everyone,

If you're looking for a not so positive post from me about the R1T you've come to the right place.

I've had more driving time in the R1T and I can honestly say the built in navigation is less than ideal. In fact, it sucks. I think that's my biggest gripe with the vehicle so far.

I've found that it always tries to route you on carpool only exits and recognizes partial lane tolls on 405 as a "toll road" thereby completely disabling Driver+. It can't find a location name or addresses as well as Google Maps. The travel eta is also amazingly inaccurate. On surface streets, it has been too late in telling me when to make the next turn after I miss a turning it has to recalculate.

I understand software is difficult and Google maps wasn't built in 2 years. I tried to give Rivian the benefit of the doubt when I first saw the truck and spoke to their engineers at Fully Charged Live in February 2020. Where they believed they could do better than Google, hence why no Android Auto or Apple Carplay, and where one of the software engineers from ABRP spoke with them to work on integrating ABRP into the Rivian ecosystem.

Frankly I'm surprised by the lack of progress on this front. We currently don't have a "better than Google Maps" solution nor do we have the ability to send ABRP routes to the R1T. I think having a robust navigation solution is a key strategy to make this product successful. Entertaining alternative navigation solutions while they developed their own Rivian solution would also have been a wise solution.

As someone who's new to the Seattle area, driving around with an essentially dumb navigation system is not ideal. I also haven't found a good place to mount my phone to use Android Auto. I'm sure as more of us take our Rivian's to places we aren't familiar with by following their "Keep The World Adventurous Forever" slogan/motto, we will feel that the Rivian navigation solution is woefully inadequate. And we will wish that they implemented Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

The navigation bar they have to meet is awfully high and I hope they will be able to succeed. And when they do, how much time will have passed and at what cost?
