I’ve had Waze try to send me down a street that had been closed for months. There was literally no pavement for several hundred yards of the street in a downtown area. Drop off from the paved sections to the unpaved sections was easily a foot and a half.

It was the first time in a couple years I’d given Waze a try after a number of times Waze sent me on random roads around small neighborhoods instead of the main highway. It wasn’t that traffic was gridlocked on the highway either.
Just want to reply to this with my experience at lunch today.

Group lunch less than two miles from my office. Because it was a bigger group, I set a Waze departure notification to make sure I wasn’t late.

The surprise started when my phone buzzed about 10 minutes earlier than I expected. And when I looked at Waze, the route was seemingly nonsensical.

But I have 11 years of experience with Waze, and thus I followed its guidance. Got there on time, third person to arrive. When the fourth person got there ~10 minutes late, they commented that they ran into a flashing traffic signal at a crazy busy intersection and that’s why they were late. The three of us who were already there all commented something along the lines of “That’s why Waze took us in a circle to get here.”

Was close to 30 minutes for everyone to arrive. Only the Waze users were on time.

Asking to play songs, get directions, that kind of stuff I think heh.
Two weeks in, I've not found Alexa to do anything well. Never plays the song or artist requested, when I ask for directions to someplace a few miles away e.g. Costco, all the options presented are for Costco locations 10-20 miles away, searching for a business that is named on the Rivian Nav. map returns zero results (same thing happens when searching via keyboard on the nav screen).

IMO they've shot themselves in the foot trying to think they're smarter and better at this than the two largest players in the industry that have thousands of people working on their mapping products and a ten year head start.

My condo development is going on 5 years old.....doesn't show up on the navigation....just a field.
Overhead shot of my house in Seattle looks to be close to 8 years old based on the way the yard looks.

It has real time traffic info in it...
I don't think it updates as frequently. I always set my phone to navigate in parallel with the R1. Yesterday going to pickup my son Google Maps showed 25 minutes. Rivian map showed 10 and never updated traffic to show the slowdown/stoppage on the way there.

The jury is still out. I imagine they are measuring their progress/success on a several year timeline, not the present day. It's clear that in many things software the goal for launch was "good enough" or even "somewhat functional". They realistically don't need to have a nav system that is competitive with Google/Apple/etc. for several more years. There will be more buyers than vehicles despite an inferior system until they go mainstream.

It's fine to point out where they should be spending their time to improve, but it's irrelevant to make a final proclamation of whether they succeeded or not, because that's imposing an artificial timeline that they haven't been working on. If one were to extrapolate the rate of improvement from OTA's in just the first few months, the vehicle will be able to execute a moon landing by 2025....

Out driving last night, keyed in an address we wanted to check out...on-board Nav brought us to the back side of the property on an adjacent road. To get to the actual address, we had to go around the country block which took us about 5 miles to get to the actual street address we put in.

Seems like the navigation gets you to the pin on the map where the address, not necessary the actual street accessible addressing for what you put in. I had a similar issue trying to find the Rivian Waypoint chargers in Kill Devil Hills at a park, it brought me to a dead end road in a residential section. I could have hiked through the woods from there to get to the parking lot with the chargers (that were not yet turned on).

Moral of the story, always verify navigation for local use. Traveling, I have not had any trouble and was able to successfully hit all the Electrify American waypoints following the nav.

I had the same issue just recently, except I was in the city, so it was easy to just notice and make the next turn to go down the correct street. Interesting that it’s a common problem.
